Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Meansville celebrated its 156th anniversary with special services held Sunday, Sept. 27.
Established in 1870 as an offshoot of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, the congregation originally gathered in a wooden structure in downtown Meansville. Early pastors were Rev. Collier, Rev. Leeks, Rev. Fuller, Rev. Palm, Rev. Bald, Rev. Rucker, Rev. A.M. Reeves, Rev. C.C. Balls and Rev. W. Whatley.
They spread the gospel, baptized new believers, performed marriages and ordained deacons.
When local merchants sought the downtown property to open a store, Pastor Bobby Lee Barrett and church officials made the wise move to trade the property for the church’s present location on Hwy. 109 about a mile outside of town.
Rev. Alfred Davis pastored the church for 40 years and presided over the move to the new brick sanctuary in 1977.
The highlight of the anniversary service was the presence of Mother Hattie Colquitt King. At age 100, she is the church’s oldest member.

The PC Lady Pirate volleyball squad travels to Hart County Saturday for a 10 a.m. match in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA state volleyball tournament. Pike is the tourney’s #20 seed. Hart County is seeded #13.
The PC Lady Pirates made short work of the Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA state softball playoffs here Monday. PC swept the doubleheader, winning game one 15-0 and game two 19-0.
Pike will face Lumpkin County in round two early next week. The Lady Pirates are the tourney’s #6 seed. Lumpkin County is seeded 11th.
The kickoff for tonight’s football game between Pike County and Jackson in Jackson has been moved up to 6 p.m. due to the threat of severe weather from the approaching hurricane.
The Pirates (4-2, 3-0) are on a three game winning streak after a 35-21 win over Central Macon last week. The Red Devils (2-4, 1-2) are coming off a 26-13 loss at Callaway.
The Pirates are a four-point underdog in the contest, according to the Maxwell/AJC projections.
