Hundreds lined the highway for the Independence Day Pride of Pike parade with the theme "We Shall Never Forget." As the parade passed the courthouse, spectators applauded loudly as volunteers carried plaques commemorating the 173 veterans from Georgia who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pride of Pike Independence Day celebration will kick off Saturday at 4 p.m. with veterans of all eras lead the leading parade participants as Grand Marshalls. "We Will Never Forget" is the theme this year and 173 volunteers are needed to carry a memorial placard with the names of Georgia military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. [Full story »]

Funding of the Pride of Pike parade and fireworks display was a hot issue at the April 14 commission meeting. Last year the county funded the $12,000 fireworks display. The recreation authority requested $9,000 from the county this year after putting $3,000 of parks and recreation money toward the annual event. Commissioners did not decide the issue but it will be brought up again at the April 27 meeting. [Full story »]

The Pride of Pike festival has a new sponsor this year, but county residents can still enjoy a fireworks extravaganza and a family-friendly event celebrating Independence Day.

Pride of Pike 2009 is being hosted by the Pike parks and recreation authority. The chamber of commerce, the previous host, decided in March to dump the July 4 festival due to the cost amid the current depressed economic climate. The authority then took over the event. [Full story »]
