The Pike County schools Christmas concert was canceled Dec. 3 as rain caused the old middle school auditorium to leak. According to superintendent Dr. Mike Duncan, the auditorium is past due for repair. Heavy rains and leaking this year led to the decision to close the auditorium until the roof can be fixed.

I agree. All that money was spent to build the new middle school...why not build a new auditorium as well???

Have you the new Fine Arts Center in Lamar County? That's what PC needs. Maybe we could pass a SPLOST to fix up our school system's facilities like they did. Oh wait, did I say SPLOST? Nevermind.

Perhaps the BOE could use some of the $25 million dollar budget to fix the school grounds that they were supposed-to-be maintaining all along.

Hmm, since this is a pic of middle school, this and the auditorium should be repaired.
Wonder if BOE will part with some of their money instead of paying big to some of the ones at superintendents office

Have you been to the old Griffin High School auditorium? They remodeled instead of tearing down. It is fabulous.

I noticed that. I can only imagine what the Auditorium cieling looks like now. It's been bad for decades.......

And has done more for this school system than anyone could hope for. In order for this county to excel, this way of thinking must change. The potential here is incredible. Unfortunately this potential is limited by attitudes such as these. Can't we just do what is best for the education of our children. Why can't that be the focus?

Sorry guys- the old middle school is actually the old high school. Both that and the old gym WERE built in the 50's. However, the auditorium was not built in 1955.

Pike county had great schools long before Dr. Duncan got here and they will continue to have great schools long after he is gone. I don't personally know him, but I have personal experiences with the school, my family has more than 4 generations worth of experience. I'm sure he is doing his best, but let's not be led to believe the school system is great because of it's superintendent. The expenses need to be curbed at the top and shared more with the teachers (who actually make the difference). And, sometimes, when the economy is not-so-well, repairs might be the best option (curbing expenses). I'm tired of it, too. If you want administratively expensive schools, move back or move on to Fayette or whereever the schools fit your need.

We all know that the auditorium being "closed" is Duncan's way of putting it on the county agenda to get taxpayers to pony up. Where are our priorities? We have 15 football coaches but first grade classes have half time parapros. Is this really the best use of BOE funds?

When we have fellow Pike citizens that think a 1 cent sales tax for SPLOST is too much to pay for this countys needs we are in BIG trouble. The Middle School auditorium will be the least of our problems. There must come a time we quit dumping money year after year in buildings that are completely outdated such as our beloved auditorium and court house. I'm not saying to tear it down, just a more up to date Judicial Center and Sheriff's Department that is NOT the first thing you see when you come through town. I loved this community and I'm very proud of the schools, I just wish some people would get out of there old ways of doing things and embrace change instead of continuing to try and to bandaid our schools, goverment buildings and county roads. And speaking of roads, how many patch's do you do to roads before it's just better to repaved them. Then again this is where SPLOST would benifit the county.

The last splost by the school system was for adding to the previous splost funding for the new middle school and also there were some additional funds set aside to do some work on school property. If the auditorium and middle school are in as bad shape as we are being told...wouldn't there have been signs a few years ago when the schools were getting ready for the last splost to plan for this? Buildings don't just fall apart like this....there had to have been signs this was coming and they were being ignored. This could have been on the last school systems splost and they wouldn't have been in this mess. POOR PLANNING!

Hmph.. doesn't surprise me a bit. People THINK that Pike Co schools are the best, but they JUST DON"T KNOW.....

I'm wonderin why this Duncan fella doesn't donate some of his 6 figure salary to the improvement (!) of this auditorium. He and that other overpaid fella... the county manager? could both use a refresher course in fiscal responsibility. Pretty soon there'll be noone left in this county to squeeze the dollars out of.... kinda like gettin blood from a turnip

If your forward thinking educational leaders would have replaced that dump 15 years ago we wouldn't have this problem would we? Jealous of a man's salary are you?...why don't you go to school, get you a doctorate degree and then we will listen to how you want to run things...ok smart guy?

What you do not realize is that they are not only are coaches, they teach your children. One is the former system teacher of the year who teaches social studies. His students will tell you that they love his class. Not ALL of the coaches are PE coaches. There are two science teachers, two social studies teachers, and the head coach is an assitant principal. These guys are in the classroom teaching your children, preparing lesson plans, making parent contacts. Putting in long hours not only coaching but being a teacher also. And then you make a big deal when they do not win ballgames. If you were to divide up the hours these coaches put into coaching, they would probaly only make about $2.00 an hour or less. Get a life and quit bringing up coaches when money is discussed. If you were to ask any player on the football team, they would say that the coaches not only coach, but teach them about life and the struggles that they can have. I know because I have a player on the team and he loves these coaches. He tells me that they are also great teachers in the classroom. Pike has great teachers and good quality coaches that teach.

Well you yokels must be the only people who think he is overpaid, since every time a super-intendant job opens up in this state his phone starts ringing. And he thinks enough of Pike County to continually turn them away. It says a lot about a persons integrity to do that.

Is this the way to solve the problems faced by the Good Residents of Pike County? I read the comments posted by all and for the most part, think that the concerns are over-shadowed by the bickering, name calling etc. There should be open, frank & constructive dialogue between these fine people that would yield a positive result. Nothing will be solved by this type of "Negative" energy. Perhaps the goal is not to solve it in the first place. The whole Country is decaying before our eyes and we're worried about a salary or an individual's credentials and not about a way to solve the roof. Please for the sake of all the residents and future residents, take a stand towards civility and put the effort into ideas rather than hatred. Pike County is just an example of what is happening around the Country only this problem would be easier to fix than having to repair a Nation. I have never in all my years witnessed the amount of hatred, corruption & mis-direction etc. exhibited in every direction that we might look. This can only be repaired if we truly care to preserve our little piece of earth that we call "Home"

code enforcement can not touch school property. as for do little duncan, what a joke.duncan is in it for the money and we are part of the stepping stones. Most of these so called doctorate educators don't have sence to get out of the rain. yea they are over paid at the upper levels and the teachers are not paid enough. there are a lot over at the boe that make more than the cm. county employees are paid a lot less than some of the so called top educators. for you that called it splost, with the boe it is called elost.the posted that wanted everything to be just wonderful and we all get along,i bet you voted for obama the other joke. yea, i used all lower case in this because i have a low opinion of the boe as a whole.
