In recent decades, layoffs were the standard procedure for shrinking labor costs. Reducing the wages of those who remained on the job was considered demoralizing and risky: the best workers would jump to another employer. But now pay cuts, sometimes the result of downgrades in rank or shortened workweeks, are occurring more frequently than at any time since the Great Depression.
State workers in Georgia are taking home smaller paychecks. So are the tens of thousands of employees in California’s public university system. The steel company Nucor and the technology giant Hewlett-Packard have embraced the practice. So have several airlines and many small businesses.

Yea, I USED to think that till I tried to get help for my children. I never saw such nail digging and heel grinding from everyone in the schools to stop this from happening. From the teacher on up to the superintendent.
Ever since then, I will never like Pike schools again.
As for pay cuts vs job cuts, I would think that would be a no brainer? I would rather have less pay than no pay at all.
Maybe employers see this differently, but they are employees, too! They have to earn a paycheck as well.
My husband pay is cut by 5 hrs a week, and our property tax went up $300 this year because of the state not implementing the homestead exemption this year.
As for dumpster diving? I haven't gotten to that point yet. I do things like hand me down clothes for all kids/grandkids, wash and re use aluminum foil and food storage bags, reuse birthday/christmas bags, use 'green bags' to help food last longer, use the 'www.grocerygame.com' system to save 60% on my groceries every week, eat out only about 2 times a month, go to Wilsons in griffin to save LOTS on groceries, don't have a cell phone,use same clothes/shoes for years, and more.
I haven't worked since 1998 and we have one income. It CAN be done, but you have to change your lifestyle and don't worry about keeping up with the Joneses.
but, I still have YET to figure out how to get that darn hubby to drop the $60 a month direct tv bill!
As for Obama saving the world?!?!? Funny how him and the gov't are EXEMPT from the common sense that the REST of the free world follows IF THEY have any common sense, which is to NOT throw MORE MONEY at debt !!!!
Unfortunately, that means WE as taxpayers, no matter how much common sense we have (or don't have) are partaking in the stupidity of this administration.
I thought 'we the people' had to VOTE on everything the gov't does???
I know that we have representative for each of us in each state, but they are NOT representing us!! If they were, this stupid overspending would NOT be happening!
VOTE THEM ALL OUT NEXT TIME!!
OR, is it that Obama's communism is showing so much that it doesn't matter what 'we the people' want, he's going to do what he wants anyway?? Seems that way to me!
