I don't understand why Pike County doesn't build the new schools large enough. We just had a new Middle School built and they're already talking about adding more rooms to it. Why wouldn't you build a school large enough to accomodate the children for the current year and the next several years?
Well as a former employee with the pike county school system, the reason they didn't build a bigger school was because Mr.Duncan,in my book he doesn't deserve the title Dr.Duncan might not have been able to make his $140,000 a year if they had of spent too much more money. Also they hired Dr.Webber and started him off at $100,000 a year, look at the DOAA website and look at how much some of these people make and then you will surely understand why we are in a hole as far as money goes.
Dr. Duncan hires only his friends from Clayton and Fayette counties for the leadership and administrative jobs. Any good paying jobs go to his friends, therefore, no Pike Co. people are making the decisions for our schools.
Removing school nurses could be the worst mistake made in these cuts. Monday morning 2/9/09, I received a call from Nurse Betty Crawford at Pike Elementary. She asked that I take my youngest son to the doctor immediately as he had begun to experience pain in his abdomen. Even though that was his only symptom - she wanted me to have him checked for appendicitis. She was right, and because of her quick identification of his emergency, we were able to get him into an operating room that evening - before his appendix ruptured. Without trained, caring nurses in our school systems, our children will be at risk. Can you imagine what could have happened if someone without Betty's training and knowledge had seen my son and just dismissed his "tummy ache"? This situation could have turned out a lot worse.
