VIDEO: Pirates sunk by Hurricanes in overtime

What started as another friday night lights setting (complete with tailgaters, body paint and miniature cheerleaders trying desperately to be like their big sisters) ended in an overtime showdown between the Pike County Pirates and the Monticello Hurricanes.

As the sun began to set and the flames from the tailgate grilles died out the Pirate boys dashed through a line of cheerleaders and marching band members with the charisma and attitude that is indicative of high school football.

The name of the quarterback was Nate!!! It is a shame they pulled him out right before the touchdown he made and awesome drive down the field!!

please dont turn our HS program into a Rec ball fiasco... thats why my kid never played rec ball here... the militant parents that believe their kid is the best.

Way to go Nate. That was your touchdown. It is a shame they did not give you the glory. I do not understand why they play the quarterback on offense & defense. They need a break. As many as there is on the team I think they should have enough players to pick from.

I have a graduate HS football player so that is not my son I was talking about. I love the quarterback very much but he was hurting & they put another player in and he got us down the field & he should not have been taken out.

I would like to thank you for bringing this up. My family and I just moved here and attended our first game on Friday night. We were schocked to see such a huge amount of players dressed out on the sidelines but yet several of the key starting players were playing both sides most of the night. I thought Nate did a great job with the drive you mentioned and that Cody needed to rest. I challenge the coaches to figure out a way to play both QB's throughout the night and to try and keep key offensive positions off of the defense. I admit to being a newbie but even I could see that Cody is obviously the starting QB and obviously one of the team leaders but he is not superman and will get tired and possibly hurt if he continues to play as much as he did Friday night. I applaud his( and the whole teams) determination and great efforts. We will be back this Friday decked in our Pirate attire and cheering on the home team.

I agree with Anonymous. Nate is not my son either but I do have a son on the team. No one is trying to turn this into a fiasco - only trying to give glory to a young man who deserves it. I think the coaches do an awesome job and my son loves football - but everybody does things that maybe should have been differant. I along with Anonymous think that Kody Adams is an awesome player - but he does need some rest so that he does not injure himself and hurt his football career. We have a lot of talent on the football team!!

I totally agree that the players should be either offense OR defense but not both. If the quarterback gets hurt playing defense take him out and let the other quarterback play the rest of the game. But if they both get hurt because of this offense/defense thing then we have no quarterback and there is no way to play.

I think a couple of players should sit out a game or two and get their attitudes adjusted. especially the one in question and the other one that threw his helmet and stormed off the field @ the end of the game. it might just teach them a little something about life. like its not all about them....

I dont realy understand this comment but as a former teacher and administrator in Pike who rarely missed a football game for ten years home and away. It is always easy to second guess the coaches on coaching decisions but coaches see all the players ever day in practice and know the capabilities of each player and place Players in positions and at appropriate time to get the best possible results. If you expect to win (which is the case in Pike County) You must play the best players reguardless of who they are .

YOU hit the nail on the head. Just let the boys play football and stop all the crying about who did what and who didnt get to do nothing. I think we have a great coaching staff. Thats why they the coaches and we are in stands let them do their jobs and enjoy game.

I personally like the coaching staff we have now. I don’t always agree with the decisions that are made, but it’s not my job to make the decisions, nor anyone else in the stands on Friday night. I don’t have to live with decisions that are made on the playing and practice field. One thing I do believe about our current coaching staff is that they care for the players on a deeper level than just athletes. My son played for this team for two years in middle school and all four years of high school. He was not a “star” player. He received no scholarship to continue his education through football. What he learned from this program was responsibility, integrity and teamwork. He learned how to play hard in the game and win or lose be proud of his team’s effort and shake hands with his opponent at the end of the game. Coach Mac and his staff taught him and the other players these ideals, unlike the last head coach that was here that showed these boys how to quit when the chips were down because he did not want two losing seasons tagged on to the end of his career.

there is no doubt that the previous coach stoked the fire for Pike County football. I will give him that. What I will not do is give him respect as a mentor to young boys. It is a fact that he walked out on this team because he knew the next two years were going to be rough ones. He then tried to play it down by running for school board. thank goodness that fell through. We dont need his kind of attitude in our system period...

football is a team sport if someone wants to get glory for themselves and not the team then they need to play tennis or play the piano. the glory comes to the team after they work together as a unit and give their best effort.GO PIRATES GATA

Pirate Dawg , you are correct football is a team sport but it is a team sport that requires more than 19 players. The question we have all been trying to get an answer on is, why we can not find enough players to field 11 starting offensive players and 11 starting defensive players. Also, even these 22 need to be relieved at some point. I agree that the coaches are doing a great job but it would be great as "paying, supporting" citizens if we knew why it was happening, then we might be more understanding.

1) The coach should not have to explain himself or his actions to the public when it concerns how he runs the team. He is the HEAD coach which means he is in charge, period. His job is on the line for the way these kids play, not yours. He and his coaching staff prepare for a game all week (I'd guess about 25-30 hours per week), not just show up for kick off.

2) He may not have the depth that you see on the sideline. I'm sure that he plays his VARSITY level players as much as he can on Fridays. The other players are there to be part of the team and "wait" until they are VARSITY level athletes. In some cases, seniors that have played four years still don't have what it takes to play on the varsity level.

3) This is high school football, not college or the NFL. Lots of schools have kids that play both ways on Friday nights. They put their BEST players in the positions they are suited for, so the team can get the best result. There is a reason kids are 2nd or 3rd string players. Coaches will give a player a series/ few plays off to recover, then put them back on the game.

4)Don't try to understand, just enjoy the game.

IF you dont like how coaches are doing their jobs then maybe you know more and can get to be the HEAD COACH. Coach Mac and his staff have been amazing with the guys. My son played for pike for 6 years and i can tell you he loved all coaches because he was not just taught football, he was tought how to be a man, how to be a team player, respect, dignity and the list goes on and on. THe coaching staff is so much more than coaches to these guys they are their friends. We at PC have the best coaching staff ever and i commend them on the job they perform on the field and off the field. Without the coaching staff we have now, PC would not have the outstanding young men we have and the outstanding team we have. Coach Mac has given our guys the moral that they have needed as a team. And i as a supporter and a parent say THANKS to all of the Coaching staff and of course Tim Manley to a job well done. I will be there 4 every game cheering you all on as a team not for the ones that are on field ever play. And how many other schools say THE LORD'S PRAYER before game and after. THat tells me alot about what we have at PC.
