It is interesting that, in economic tough times, Gov. Sonny Perdue has decided to furlough teachers.

Aren’t these same teachers the ones responsible for bringing up Georgia’s various test scores to some level above those of a third world country where they stand now?

I agree except for the bus thing. I do drag my butt out of bed and wait with my kid for the bus but fortunately I'm blessed enough to have a job that I can adjust my extremely early work schedule(to most folks) during the school year to accomodate this. Also, I think "school taxes" need to be paid based on how many kids you have in school----not the older generation like my parents almost 70 yrs. old who still pay tax every year to keep up the slacker's kids. And who can't afford a buck to get their kid lunch everyday.... that's just pathetic.

Amen and Amen! Those getting free lunch are usually the ones with ice cream money everyday and designer duds. It is a crime what we hand out!!!

Yes, how "simplistic" of you and how simple of you. You assume that everyone has been born with all the things that you were that made you what you are. Why shouldn't teachers be furloughed? The rest of the state agencies have been doing this for a year now. Are the children suffering or the teachers? Here's an idea, stop giving raises to to the thousands of teachers in the state and put that money toward schools. Your comments seem judgemental to me.

I agree with some but not all of this article. Most folks that live in Pike County do not work in Pike County. So that I can get to my job and provide for my family, my kids have to get themselves to the bus stop which is the END of my driveway. I thank God for that.

Well said. Though I don't agree with everything, you are saying things that teachers would get fired for saying but are probably thinking.

Most teachers have high expectations for students and parents have higher expectations for teacher, but none for themselves or their children. (not all parents, but a lot of them)Teachers are expected to love and nurture these kids while giving them an education so they can succeed in the world, but yet we don't have the follow through at home to achieve all of this. So much time is spent on sports and games, and not nearly enough time is spent on books and learning.

I am a teacher and I love my job. I love my students and I do all that I can do help them with their learning as well as their emotional stability and now, I am being punished by pay cuts and more work. I do it because I know that if I am not there for their kids, they may not have anyone.

In response to "a teacher" I totally agree with you. My children are still in primary school but I try to stay as involved with them and their teachers as possible and yes I do work a full time job and my kids are also a full time job but their education is so important to me that I will do whatever is needed to make sure they do their best and succeed. I have the utmost respect for teachers and I feel like they are the last ones that should be punished with paycuts. If if were not for you teachers, then where on earth would our children be? So while all may not agree with me and you are just one of the many teachers, I want to thank you for what you do for our children everyday. In our home, it is truly appreciated.

Not sure what grade you teach BUT I hope my son will be blessed to have you (or someone with your same thoughts) as a teacher..

When my children were IN SCHOOL I always went to the meetings,I was asked to attend.Iknow some of you cant.The teachers always said the parents that needed to be there werent. Oh yes I had to walk,and push a small child in astroller.This was not inPike co.THe Teachers were so nice.
