A budget crisis may have hit our schools but not our county government. Our commissioners, county manager and elected officials continue to spend as if the recession is everywhere except Pike County. Where is the leadership during these difficult times?
Pike County BOE pays part-time educators who are retired more than anyone in the state! Check out the 'part-time' counselor for the alternative school. 40,000 plus a year! Usually 3 days a wk. for a handfull of students. And the BOE gives him benefits - which is illegal (because he is in TRS).

You really don't know anything...BOE members get paid less than the avg. tax refund for Americans per YEAR...yeah that'll save 200k+...I bet your a Math major from Alabama
This is bull, why compromise a child education because of some stupid stimulus program. The world is tough enough its even tougher when you are stupid or eat up with ignorance.we have enough problems with dropouts & drugs. There are places you cannot compromise such as schools, public safety etc. Besides these teachers have families to feed also. It is mighty funny they're calling this a stimulus, but yet there still laying people off at thier jobs and still calling for furloughs. Folks we cannot boost the economy if we have no jobs. because it takes money to keep this boat afloat.
Why not take out some of the week-long breaks that are in the school year and delay the start time until September, like it used to be? Think of all the money that could be saved by not running the A/C for the entire month of August. Take out October and February breaks, and cut Thanksgiving to Thursday & Friday like the rest of the working world. Give the kids their summer back!
