BOE calls meeting tonight to discuss budget cuts and the furlough

Budget and personnel issues will be handled at a special Pike County board of education meeting called for tonight, July 23, at 6:30 p.m.

The budget discussion is expected to center around funding cuts and teacher furloughs ordered by Gov. Sonny Perdue earlier this week.

if the overpaid dr.duncan and the over paid coaching staff took a cut in pay teachers would not have to take days without pay. the teachers are worth much more than they are paid. can't say that much about dr. duncan and the coaches

The budget cuts are STATEWIDE - it has nothing to do with Dr. Duncan or local coaches. Gov. Perdue should take a cut even more. It's either this or raise your taxes---wouldn't like that would you? Likely that tax hike would cost us more than furlough days. Secondly, coaches are NOT overpaid for time put in. Thirdly, if the politician that calls himself the President would learn how to manage our govt's bank account - we wouldn't likely be in this mess...Get your facts straight before commenting please. Would you like for our teachers to be losing jobs like other systems in Ga or across the country ? Didn't think so...Some people are idiots...geez gimme a break

Duncan IS overpaid. Coaches ARE overpaid. If they were any sort of human beings they would be volunteering to take a furlough in support of the teachers.

One thing we can agree on though King Hussein has turned out to be a bigger fool than I thought.

Coaches are teachers; therefore, they are furloughed, too. Duncan has already taken a pay cut, a much larger one than the teachers. The economy stinks; Dr. Duncan doesn't have anything to do with that.

Why not take out some of the week-long breaks that are in the school year and delay the start time until September, like it used to be? Think of all the money that could be saved by not running the A/C for the entire month of August. Take out October and February breaks, and cut Thanksgiving to Thursday & Friday like the rest of the working world. Give the kids their summer back!

I agree with you dsh. But the reason that schools don't have summer like they used to, and they won't tell you this, is because of the NCLB law. This law mandates that all public school children read and do math on grade level. And the way to know they are, is to give them all state tests every year. And what's more, the better the scores, the MORE MONEY the schools get.
SO, in order to get the money schools have gone to great outrageous lenghts, but I will mention the one that has to do with your comment.
Schools have made summers shorter so the kids won't 'forget' what they have learned. This way, they can 'remember' so they can pass the state tests, so the schools can GET MORE MONEY.
When the school year changed (shorter summer) I NEVER heard of an explaination as to why this was changed. Now we know.

You homeschool your children! What do you care? Your kids have summer every day!

I graduated 20 years ago. I NEVER started school in the month of September. I started every August. Twenty years was a very long time before NCLB was passed.
