He was born in a boxcar, converted into a house, in 1937. Prison life was normal for him during his teen years. Robbery, theft, bad checks and assault landed him in jail time after time. Young Merle Haggard was a guy that couldn’t do what other people wanted him to do. It was his nature to fight the system.
