Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Ballard, age 99, of Zebulon, passed away Oct. 14, 2013 at Brightmoor Nursing Center in Griffin.
She was born in Pike County Sept. 29, 1914, daughter of the late Jobe Turner Ballard and Ione Wilson Ballard. She was the oldest member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church where she had been active in the WMU and taught Sunday School for over 50 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Troy Ogletree Ballard; son, Kenneth Ballard; grandchildren, Lori Ballard and Conrad Ballard; and brother and sister-in-law, J.W. and Ossie Ballard.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Ballard of Zebulon; grandchildren and their spouses, Bruce and Stacy Ballard of Griffin, Mitzi and Mike Barcus of Zebulon and Ryan and Amy Ballard of Zebulon; great-grandchildren, Karley and Bailey Barcus, Betsy, Lainey, William and Miles Ballard and Troy and Katie Ballard; son-in-law, Bill Ballard of Zebulon; daughter-in-law, Susan Ballard; special niece and nephew, Linda and Don Birath; sisters-in-law, Bena Williamson and Betty Ballard; special friends, Jerry and Debra Laabs of Zebulon and friends and caretakers at Brightmoor Nursing Center.
Friends may visit the family on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Thompson and Rev. Harvey Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
