Animal control addressed again
Pike County commissioners discussed animal control again at their Tuesday, Jan. 29 meeting, agreeing a new animal control ordinance needs to be drafted.
Commissioners discussed two buildings which have been offered to the county. The city of Zebulon offered to sell the county a trailer for $1, providing Pike pay the cost of moving it. The operators of the county transfer station said they will give Pike a portable building and offered to move it to the new site but it would need a concrete foundation and electrical and plumbing work done.
“At this point we’re talking about donated portable buildings and trailers from Zebulon but we haven’t looked at an animal control policy,” said commissioner Tamra Jarrett. “We do not have a plan in place. I would like to see that plan fine tuned and presented to the public so we can say this is where we’re headed.”
Commissioner Tommy Powers said he would like the board to set a time frame, not just jump into action.
County manager Mike Phillips said the animal control ordinance drafted in 2008 closely mirrors state law at that time. He said many parts of the state code have changed over the years.
It was noted public works director Todd Goolsby moved the Friends of Pike County Animals Humane Society sign to the new location on County Farm Road, next to what was once considered the borrow pit and the West Central Integrated Treatment Center which may one day provide labor for the operation. Goolsby also staked out a 300x300 spot in a flat area next to the existing driveway onto the property.
