The can from China

I was buying food the other day at the country market. On the label of some products it said 'from China'. For example the "Our Family" brand of the mandarin oranges says right on the can 'from China'.

I didnt realize how much we depend on things from other countries until a while back.I tried to find products made in the U.S.A.This a sad & scarey sitution.Ican tell some of my clothes are old when I see the Made in USA on the tag .If you dont beleive this look in your closet .I dare you!

The scary part is that so many young people have this attitude, "What's the big deal if the item made in China is cheaper?" THAT is the big deal. I really wish that Andrew and the Barnesville Commitment of Residents would make this so big that it is on the National news. USA..USA..USA Get some pretty local girls in RED/WHITE/BLUE cheer leading uniforms. We can bring the USA back without political help. WE ARE WHAT IS LEFT OF AMERICA! GO, B'VILLE......

Protectionism may sound good, but it comes at a cost. If we actually stopped buying from China, we would all be poorer, as we would either have to make all these goods ourselves or do without. If we made these goods, the labor would have to come from someone else. In this case we would be taking bankers and engineers and have them doing manual labor, drastically reducing our societal productivity.

Trade is a cornerstone of our civilization, without it we would return to the dark ages.

The more I read this...the more confused I become. If we did not buy from China, we would be forced to open our businesses again. Where is the down side? If you call today's world civilization, please turn off the lights and bring back The Dark Ages. I like Alley Oop!

Yes, that is partly a correct interpretation. We would be opening new businesses, but closing highly productive and profitable businesses in exchange for less profitable ones. Carried ad infinitum it would indeed lead back to the dark ages. One of the issues with the happy allusion to Alley Oop is that the current population is only sustained by our technology. Your policy plans would lead to mass starvation, widespread poverty, and wars over increasingly scarce goods long before subsistence levels were obtained.

Would we starve like our Grandparents who had and raised fifteen children? So If the great spider in the sky gets PMS and quits maintaining The World Wide Web, we will all starve? Don't tell The Amish people. They do not know they can live independently and thrive.

Have you seen some pictures from the Great Depression? Yes, our ancestors had many children and a great number of them died in infancy. Life was very hard for people back then. There was little time for pursuit of happiness except in the upper classes. Most people spent their entire lives just concentrating on surviving.

They had pride, morals, feelings for others. They worked sun-up to sun-down. They were not fat, rude, ruthless, lazy Takers. They were called Rednecks because they worked all day in the sun. They were surrounded on all sides by LEGAL Americans.

I agree that a large portion of their time was spent surviving. However, I think from the stories that I have heard from my great grandmother, they were happy and had some self-worth. Children knew that sometimes their very existence was determined by them being willing to help out. In society today we have so much stuff (and heaven knows I like my stuff too) we forego true happiness to get things. When you see 16 yr olds with nicer cars than their parents, and 11 yr olds with cell phones and i-pods. I guarantee they didn't make the money themselves to get it. If more kids had to bring in a little wood to stay warm in the winter it wouldn't kill them. Its not just the kids either. Adults feel like if they work their job they can come home and watch tv or do nothing the rest of the week. Thats why we are an overweight, sick society. Okay rant over...LOL

I agree with you. But everything wasn't ideal. Society as a whole was indeed more healthy. The most important thing that is missing today is the lack of families sticking together. A mother AND a father in the household.
