He was born Sept. 30, 1933 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. James served in the U.S. Navy and was a proud veteran of the Korean War. After working 33 years for Eastern Airlines he was very successful in transitioning to full-time retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jane Gregg Atkinson; sons, Gregg Atkinson of Riverton, Wyo., and wife Karen; Scott Atkinson of Atlanta and wife Alison, Clay Atkinson of Atlanta and wife Stephanie and Todd Atkinson of Decatur; his six grandchildren, Copeland Atkinson, Jacob Atkinson, James Atkinson, Mather Atkinson, Sophia Atkinson and Wyn Atkinson; his sister-in-law, Patsy Gregg; his three nephews, William (Joe) Gregg, Lee Gregg and Brad Gregg; and his two nieces, Stacey Vickers and Whitney Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
