Try running a mile as a Pirate during the Walk the Plank 5K run Saturday, Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. on the Pirates cross country track. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Pike County cross country teams with a $10 entry fee before Oct. 10 or $15 the day of the run. Contact PCHS cross country coach Andy Landers at landera@pike.k12.ga.us or 770-584-2025 to register.
“The majority of the course is on grass and has two nature trails that circle the Pike County schools,” said Landers. “The five-kilometer (3.1 mile) course starts and finishes at the Pike County Primary School.”
The Pirates and Lady Pirates cross country teams will take to the track at 9 a.m. after the Walk the Plank run as they host a High School Invitational featuring 12 other teams and a total of 300 runners.
There is no fee for anyone watching the 5K or cross country competitions and T-shirts will be available for $15 with proceeds benefiting the teams. Each race will be professionally timed by Fast Feet Timing. New Sole Running will also be at the event to size shoes to properly fit runners’ feet.
“The number one reason for running injuries is wearing shoes that don’t match the arch of your foot,” Landers said.
The teams have completed five meets so far this year and their times are progressing with every competition.
“Most of the girls team runners’ times have improved by three minutes from our first meet,” Landers said. “The boys team is getting better too. One runner is running 17 minute 5Ks and there is great competition between runners two through eight – all of them are running around 20-minute 5Ks.”
At the Trojan Invitational in Lamar County, Caleb Teachout earned first place individually and finished in 20th place out of around 400 male runners at the Battle of Atlanta Invitational at Nash Farms.
Kati Williams finished in second place overall at the Trojan Invitational. Katie Thompson finished 10th overall at the Trojan Invitational.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates runners will have home-field advantage at the Saturday, Oct. 13 meet as they perform on their home track.
“Our course is very tough, probably one of the toughest in the state and definitely the toughest we’ll run this year,” Landers said.
Coaches agree for the boys team, Caleb Teachout, Alex Singley and Justin Sanders are consistently the top three runners with JC Maddox, Austin Conine, Errick Sturm, Kevin Brock, Dustin Blohm, Brandon Nichols and Kyle Mobley rounding out the top 10.
For the Lady Pirates team, Kati Williams and Katie Thompson are the top two runners with Annie Kilcrease, Michelle Licari, Abby Carroll, Anna Lee Whitaker, Bryson Lange, Madison Holt, Madison Jones and Rachel Klaassen rounding out the top 10. Hannah White was a top five runner until an injury slowed her down.
