Teddy Bear Drive and Spring Carnival
Seven years ago, 4-year-old Pike County native Mackinnah Rogers was transported from Zebulon by ambulance to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for a broken arm. While in the ambulance, one of the paramedics gave Mackinnah a stuffed giraffe to help ease her fears. She is now 11 years old and an elementary school student at Pike County Elementary and while her arm has long since healed, her heart still breaks for other children who are injured and must face the uncertainty of an emergency situation.
The paramedic’s kindness in giving her the stuffed animal while she was injured left a lasting impression on Mackinnah. In order to give back, and help spread the same kindness she received while in the back of an Upson County Regional ambulance seven years ago, Mackinnah has taken it upon herself to collect stuffed animals and toys, and donate them to local ambulance services to be given out to pediatric patients.
Mackinnah’s mother says “This is something that she totally came up with on her own. This is actually the second year she’s done this. Last year, she donated them to Upson Regional Medical Center. They are the ones her transported her to Atlanta when she broke her arm.”
This year, Mackinnah will again work hard to collect hundreds of stuffed animals and will donate them to the Pike County division of Mid Georgia Ambulance Service, as well as other Pike County Public Safety agencies on March 3, 2012. The stuffed animals will be kept on board the ambulances and in other Public Safety vehicles, to be given out to children in need of comfort during emergency situations.
Christ Chapel Community Church, Mid Georgia Ambulance and other local community partners will be hosting Mackinnah’s Teddy Bear Drive and Spring Carnival this Saturday, March 3 at Christ Chapel Community Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is intended not only to thank Mackinnah for her generosity and support for local EMS, but also to bring the community together in support of all the local Public Safety agencies.
