Pike County Emergency Services first responders provide services at about 790 homes in Pike County each year. They often spend a lot of response time finding those homes – time that can mean the difference between life and death or a total loss fire or not. To help both first responders and citizens, the department is selling reflective address signs for $20.

Why would anyone want to buy a county looking sign for their address? They are just large and ugly. The importance of their use is understandable but you can get some reflective numbers from Lowes and Home Depot that same price and they will be more attractive.

That's great....if people think about that when and if they go to Lowe's or Home Depot. They are offering a convenient service to their community. It's a proactive effort to reduce response time and save lives. What have you done to improve your community lately?

and if you think it's easy to read the 1 inch "walmart" numbers at 3a.m. when you're trying to watch the road and look for a house, racing down the road in a firetruck or ambulance, with strobe lights flashing, you are under-informed...

and I'm sure people are worried about how attractive their mailbox looks while their child is choking, or their spouse is laying on the floor in cardiac arrest, waiting because emergency personnel can't find the house.

Only a complete idiot would buy 1” numbers to go on a mail box. Actually that statement comes from an idiot. I would agree with first poster and say the signs are ugly and basically say “county”. The concept behind the signs is a good one and there is a lot of hard work going into them I'm sure. I do see some rural land/home owners possibly purchasing them but I doubt very seriously that any home owners within a HOA will. Could you imagine riding through Wellington or Heritage Lake subdivisions with these signs on the mail boxes?

These signs are ugly and big enough to be taxed next year, be careful.

Do our Pike County Emergency Services not have GPS available to use? If not..that is just WRONG!

How big is your Scrapbook? If it is as big as that green sign, you will need some numbers from the gas station. They have an excess of nines so you can get them cheap. Evidently, they put them on the marque to store them. Have you ever purchased $3.69.99 worth of gas. I want my .01 cent back. Times are tough.

I have never called them but once in my life. It was before this really great advanced technology. I told them my address and landmarks when I called and that my front porch light would be on and I would be standing by the mailbox with a flashlight.

All that should be unnecessary with the invention of GPS units?

How far underground do you live? Tell that Geico man hello for me.

Can anyone answer me? Do we or do we not have GPS capabilities in our Pike County Emergency Service vehicles?

Please answer me............inquiring minds want to know?

Have a good Labor Day weekend........if I do not get an answer by Tuesday morning, I will put a BOLO out on Fat Bass Tard for his answer. He seems to know more than all you elected nit-wits anyway.

I use GPS all the time and it works just fine. Maybe if you had a real service such as Verzion you would notice a difference. The pre-paid phones from Mr. "B" are lacking in quality to say the least.

Well, that is the reason I was given in a letter that new larger numbers were required on mailboxes years ago. It was when 911 was introduced to the rest of the world. So do we or do we not have GPS in Pike County Emergency Services vehicles?

Never you mind. I will call our new lady county commissioner on Tuesday. She will know or find out for me. That is the way females do their job. THOROUGH!

LOL Ma Bell.......I thought of something else that may work. Move all PCES vehicles to the Pizza Hut parking lot. I will order a pizza and the emergency vehicles can follow the driver.
"Ah shoot and dern", Pike does not have a Pizza Hut, do they?

That Geico caveman should move to Pike, he can live above ground.........no exposure to modernization in Pike, huh?

Just a minute, I shall call The Colonel, Old Mc Donald, my friend Wendy, Uncle Arby, the Royal Burger King, and tell them all "about the virgin ground in Pike." Nah, I'd better change that to fertile ground. Virgin ground will cause all kinds of terrorists to show up.

I will call Walmart also. They build a store every 5 miles......they will be so excited. A prime spot on Highway 19 South between Zebulon and Hwy 18 East. Actually there are many prime spots in that area. I bet they will build 2 Walmarts.

They will just need to buy two of those non-profit (yeah right) churches in that zone. Or three if they do not hurry.

Some people in Pike County have not changed the numbers on their mailboxes. Some in Pike County have two sets of numbers on their mailboxes. If you have never tried to find the house of someone in cardiac arrest who has not posted the number on their box then keep your mouth closed and stop typing on your keyboard. Numbers on your mailbox are not designed to be pretty they are designed to assist those that need to find your house. People who complain the loudest about how long it took for the ambulance, fire truck or law enforcement unit to show up are the ones that do not have their house clearly marked. Sheila GPS is not a reliable tool when trying to find a house. Good map skills and knowledge of the area trump a GPS any day.

You may be programming yours too close to your sundial or 8track player.

Interesting, two sets of numbers on the mail boxes huh? What does that have to do with anything? Absoultly nothing. My neighbor has two sets of numbers and a flag on his mail box with an ant mound at the base of it.

What I find interesting is that so many want to say “baby choking or cardiac arrest" every time the fire service issue comes about. It doesn't happen like that and you all need to stop living the TV version of "Pike Rescue 911".

As far as GPS, it is a very reliable tool if used by trained/educated people. GSP uses GPS statewide even in Pike so there is no merit to you comment. Granted it will not give addresses. Now, if a citizen elects not to number their house accordingly and emergency services has a delay in locating them, too bad. They will be the only one to blame for their stupidity.

Wonder if our having been issued two different house numbers in the past is the reason that GPS often does not provide accurate direction? We ALWAYS inform those driving to our house NOT to use GPS as it is unreliable more often than not.

Unfortunately the citizen is not the one who gets blamed for a delay. If GPS was the answer to getting to a call, fire departments like DeKalb, Fulton, Cobb and others would not spend a large amount of time training on the roads in their territory. GPS are computers and are only as good as the programmer. They do not locate a house by the color or description. Try using a GPS to run a call when you are not familiar with the area. You don't know what city the call is in and the dispathcers can't give you information that helps. A map is often the best way to get somewhere.

Firebug, some people in Pike have not removed the old numbers from their mailboxes. As I said before some have not marked their house. So many use baby choking and cardiac arrest because it is a way to get a point across. No thinks a 50 year old with back pain or someone who can't get off the floor is a big deal.

Where is "Pike" at anyway? I looked at a map of all Georgia cities, and there is no "Pike" Georgia anywhere.

Or are you trying to be like Dekalb county, and insinuate your County is a city?

Sheila, I have had everyone from direct TV, to State Farm Insurance, to Fed ex, call Me and ask for directions because GPS does'nt know if I'm east or west of Zebulon......Go Figure.

All the huh-bub about the fire department can't find people with choking babies and cardiac arrests and not the first peep from the PCSO. I wonder why? Maybe they know where they are going and can read numbers better than firemen.

I really don't see that there is a problem at all and neither should anyone in Pike. Why? Because, the Tax Assessor has found everyone’s home with no problem. If the tax man can find you then the little old vollies should too. So, to the whinny firemen, go to the tax office and you will find the answer.
