If I was the chief of the Meansville Fire Rescue Department I would charge the county everytime the Rescue pumper or Heavy Rescue unit goes into the counties area. BTW, isn't that pumper in the back drop from the old Jonesboro fire department?
If you'll take notice of the inside of the cab, you'll see lime green paint. That antique is a second-hand truck from Spalding County. There are several old trucks like this still working fires in the county.
Consider that Meansville's population is about half a percent of Pike County's total population. The incorporated city limits account for just a quarter of one percent of our land mass.
What do they offer the county for what we will pay? In reading the paper and talking to people who have the information, the county will pay Meansville $5,000 to honor a mutual aid agreement. Why? The City has said time and time again that the new truck (paid for by a county-wide tax) will not leave the city limits. That leaves an antiquated fire truck and an antiquated truck on loan from the Forestry Department. Neither work well nor do they have equipment that will do any good on a fire.
What does Meansville pay US for mutual aid? It seems that we provide them fire, rescue, and medical services for free. Yes, the citizens pay taxes, but there is no mutual aid fee. Spalding County and Griffin have a mutual aid agreement. There is no cost associated with it by either party. They just work together. They cooperate. Why does Meansville want or need money? If they cannot budget enough funds for their fire department, the City should raise taxes to pay for it. That is what any other municipality would do. My tax money should not need be spent.
$5,000 could be a big amount to our fire department and what they do for the rest of the taxpayers. Their budget has been cut for many years. No one cares about the things they have to have. The number of people who understand that should be a lot higher.
If Meansville cannot maintain a proper budget then they should face reality. The people who run the place have to be responsible enough to see that. They should look again at the county's offer to fund and operate their fire department as any other county station. Sometimes reality is a hard pill.
Meansville is a small, irresponsible municipality run by people with no knowledge of running such an operation. I or any other taxpayer should pay for what they lack. No property owners should have to worry if they are protected or not. Their insurance premiums should not be higher.
Instead of flushing money down the toilet that is Meansville, the county manager and the commissioners should realize they have to do something unpopular. They have to build a new fire station and put trucks in it to properly protect this county. If they do not, it is them who should be held accountable for every dollar of loss and each drop of blood.
1) They do not run calls inside or outside the city. In a year they have run one or two total. An open records request with 911 will show what they have done as opposed to how many times a county truck has gone to their rescue.
2) Listen close to your scanner and tell others to do the same. Meansville's call sign is station 4. The firefighters there use four numbers, like 401, 402, 403. You will not hear them very often.
3) Listen for their trucks. The old pumper truck is 4-0, the new pumper is 4-1, and the Forestry truck is firetruck 4-2. The only truck you will hear go out is 4-2.
4) Meansville has a history of not honoring mutual aid agreements. In the past they have run calls with firetruck 4-2 but used a call sign of an engine. Imagine the surprise when a Forestry truck shows up a house fire instead of an engine!
Those are the facts. General Ron cant even lie and try to make them right.
Meansville will provide mutual aid only on paper. They don't respond to many calls within their own municipality - thankfully the county does. Go request numbers for responses by their members within and outside the city limits both while under a mutual aid agreement and while none was committed to. A mutual aid agreement will only benefit the citizens of the county on paper and for ISO ratings for insurance, NOT when there is an actual emergency. If ISO returns to evaluate the water system "improvements" they should re-evaluate the rest of the department to include responses vs. dispatches as well as a RECHECK on equipment just in case there was any counted in the rating on their trucks "on loan" from other municipalities that might not actually be there on a daily basis....OOPS! Did I say that out loud? Well, anyone can make a mistake and if that happened it was probably an "oversight." Regardless, Meansville is in reality a PAPER FIRE DEPARTMENT.
Thankyou for that information Bullhorn. I did not know it was that bad. Who decided to pay Meansville $5000.00? I would love to have that name. As for Unprotected's comment about borrowed equipment helping Meansville's fire rating, well that is fraud. I would like to know who I need to contact because I will do it first thing Monday morning. Perhaps the next picture of Mr. Huckaby will be from inside the Pike County jail.
That last line was a little dramatic don't ya think? "who should be held accountable for every dollar of loss and each drop of blood." Each drop of blood? "Really"!!!!!! lol
I agree the county should incorporate Meansville Fire Dept. into the county unified system for the betterment of fire protection of both city and unincorporated Pike County but, I just don’t see it happening any time soon.
Enough already! Ain't skeerred! I can get you a new firehouse just like I built on Hollonville Road but you need to settlr down and focus. There can be only 1 chief of the MFD, 1 spokesperson. Now let's move forward together.
Tell us O'Great One how you get everything for free but can't pay yo property tax? I'm skeerred!

Puleeze!..I live near "downtown" Meansville meaning, in absence of a "downtown", the City Limit sign is close to my home. I'm making a public request. If my LifeFone medical alert system is activated requiring emergency intervention, please don't dispatch Mr. Huckaby to come to my aid. He is a very nice Christian gentleman who cares about the community, but, I don't think he is physically strong enough to pull my big butt out of my recliner if I have a stroke, heart attack or something similar. Please send a young know it all whipper snapper like that Firebug or at least someone who works out in the gym and is strong. After all, I could need mouth to mouth resuscitation and Firebug is full of a lot of hot air and fits the bill.
Does he hang out in the Meansville station?
"Come 'n listen to a story 'bout a farman named Jed,
Poor farfighter barely kept his hoseline fed,
Then one day he was cipherin' at a pump panel,
and out of the taxpayers come a bubblin' SPLOST,
sales tax that is,
wasted on a truck,
never sees the light of day,
garage kept,
soon to be museum piece...."
"We done fooled 'em (ISO and the citizens) again, Uncle Jed!!!", said Lt. Jethro.
Sounds like a phony post to stir up the pot. I find it very hard to believe that an elderly citizen would make such a post. Sounds like a jealous smoke jumpa or some wanna be rescue randy.......that wears a red -tee shirt and has stickers all over their vehicle.
Don' chew bother callin' them thar ISO peeples chef, i dun called 'em an' they a' comin!!!! I dunno why, but they dun said don' chew worry, they 'a bringun' they microtelescopee!!! Laws yes, help is a' comin' an' they bringun' a brand spankin' new ISO ratun' withum!!!!
My goodness Firebug! You ain't no Law Dog!! Show us your shiny badge! What a hoot! You are still paranoid little Firebug..watch your step..oops! fell again did ya'? Watch that hose! oops! That post seems genuine to me and maybe comes from a knowledgeable professional. Good luck to him/her.
You know...some of you should really be ashamed of yourselves. The reality here is that these guys (and gals) volunteer their time to YOU and YOUR communities. All of the fire personnel in this county are heroes in my book and bashing anyone who gives their personal time and sacrafices for others should not be subjected to the kinds of things being said in this forum. If Meansville wants to remain out of the county consolidation, so be it. If the citizens that live and vote in Meansville are unhappy about that, they can choose to contact their mayor and council and change it. If Meansville is getting a better ISO rating by remaining an individual department, then the citizens in the city will benefit from lower insurance costs and more power to them. Why is it that there are always some people to have to control everything and when they cannot control things, they have to speak negatively of others. You should be ashamed.
Honey, these are tough times for people all over the county. We don't need some self rightous annon. comment about how bad we are. What we need is an investigation into how all tax money in this county is spent.
Shameful, you are doing exactly the same thing. You take it upon yourself to bash the bashers with your negativity. Everyone has a right to express their opinions because Meansville isn't quite oBUMa Country yet. Quit being a shameful, whining and whistling kettle of scorn. We all love our volunteer firefighters as well as our freedom of speech.
MFD better watch out chief "concord smoke wanna be jumpa" is wanting to take over. I think he is Henderson is disguise, he rambles and spews stupid every post.

Shameful says, "The reality here is that these guys (and gals) volunteer their time to YOU and YOUR communities."
Some do, others only on profess to; CHECK THE STATS.
"If Meansville is getting a better ISO rating by remaining an individual department, then the citizens in the city will benefit from lower insurance costs and more power to them."
That's true as long as all information presented to ISO is up front and honest including mutual aid agreements (bet they don't know about that one yet, or do they?), responses by members, and equipment on available on trucks EVERY DAY. AGAIN, some of us know what the reality is while others such as yourself haven't a clue and will not believe it until they/you see it with your own eyes...OPEN RECORDS REQUEST the FACTS and see for yourself. Until then you should not speak from an uninformed position.
SHAMEFUL is a word that should be used when people misrepresent their qualifications, abilities, dedication, and professionalism.
SHAMEFUL is a word thet should be used when people use their title or rank, unearned through experience or knowledge, to lure their elected leaders down a path leading to self-destruction just so that they can keep their bugle(s) that have been earned by nothing more than self-aggrandizement and the sad reality that before now, no one else could be found that could do the job at a level deserved by the people paying for the service.
THANK YOU to all the PROFESSIONAL (not to be confused with paid) volunteers that serve our county. Please continue your selfless dedication to ALL of Pike County's citizens. For those who like to play politics and serve themselves, SHAME ON YOU.
To the City of Meansville - if my house catches fire and all county units are busy....STAY IN THE HOUSE (as if there is another possibility), me and my 5/8" garden hose will at least RESPOND!
That is a sucker punch to Fire Chief Danny Henderson. He will make a comeback. He is the single greatest asset to Pike we have ever had. I Stand Strong Bold and with the man. For the honor he brought with his intelligence, certifications and skills he got slam dunked by the BOC.

Watching the buffoonery

If it wasn't so sad for the affected citizens it would be funny. Our "professional" CM threw the former Chief under the bus in a weak attempt to bring Meansville into a consolidation of services with the county. He was then outfoxed by the Mayberry City Council and ended up holding an empty bag...what a pro. We should probably expect him to cave into their demands for $5000.00 of county tax money so that they can afford to continue to run their "fire department" and provide "mutual aid." Again, what a pro. COMMISSIONERS, WE HOPE YOU'RE WATCHING.

Hopefully the more competent county commissioners won't cave to the Meansville demand for money on the pretense that they can't provide mutual aid without it. If they claim they won't be able to sign an agreement (which hasn't been in place for over a year, nor honored for longer than that) it it will in turn raise their ISO rating to a number that will make their citizens howl because of their new insurance rates...and ISO IS being notified of the lack of an agreement. That'll result in a change of attitude and a shift in power to the county if the county administration is sharp enough to recognize it and use that position of power to benefit ALL citizens of the county instead of the less than 200 within the city limits. WAKE UP COMMISSION. Stop catering to Gomer Powers.
The CM has already paid the 5k to the city with out a Mutual aid agreement even though they dont have alot to offer the county since all of their young members moved to a county station. Correct me if im wrong but the number of active members that go to calls from meansville is at 3. The money was paid out of FD budget. Fire chiefs were not aware of this till weeks after and only 2 commissioners knew about it. The County dept is in need of every penny since they have been cut nearly 50% on their budget. There are items that need to be purchased to continue to hold our ISO rating and there is a paper trail were CM has been asked to approve the purchase and denied it. So when ISO makes their trip back expect to see a HUGE increase on insurance premiums. Keep up the great work volunteers. Maybe one day they will realize if yall got tired of their BS and quit they would be forced to hire full time firefighters immediately.
Good job Sawyer! You flushed $5,000 down the toilet. That money did nothing for any of the citizens on the south end of the county. It could have been better spent somewhere else.
Fire him! He can go back to his house in Ellaville and collect unemployment there.
If Danny is going to make a come back what is he waiting for? Tick-Tock goes the come back clock.
Rumor has it "comcord smoke jumpa" wants to have his chance at the top. If that were to happen....(LOL) he would be there less than a week before I spanked him out of office.
