Regardless of opinion, cast your SPLOST ballot

It seems to me that a yes vote on the upcoming SPLOST referendums in Lamar and Pike counties should be logical for property owners.

However, I see numerous signs on the roadside in front of farms and rural acreage opposing SPLOST – particularly in Pike County.

I don’t understand that sentiment but I am sure this column will trigger considerable input on the topic.

Walter, the SPLOST vote in Pike county is a direct parallel to the US House of Representatives upcoming vote to raise the debt limit. I've written Rep.Westmoreland and informed him of my ardent opposition to raising the debt limit. The 'Republicrats'have it within their power to begin a much needed starvation diet for the all consuming leviathan that has become the federal government. Its become a 'kleptocracy' a government of thieves. Rep. Westmoreland has assured me he will vote against it. I will be watching. Should he fail to do so I will actively work against his re election.

once again, you assume that people outside the county will pay the splost. they won't. the majority will be paid by property owners.

in addition, can you please explain to me who lives in the county who do not pay property taxes? i've asked others but they can't tell me anyone who doesn't pay property tax.

the time has come to say enough is enough. pike county politicians continue to waste the peoples money and it's time to put a stop to it. if they continue down this track, there will be 5 new ones and we will continue to renew the lot of them until we get 5 that work for the people.

The rhetoric runs high over this splost. So I'll just add a few more words. If anyone driving through the county wanted to stop and eat, where? A half dozen cafes and fast food parlors? How about gas stations. All of which charge more than the surrounding counties? Maybe someone would want to watch the local sports. How would they find the sports complex? As usual, the cart is placed in front of the horse. People passing through comment about how quaint and rural our county is. Then continue on their journey to find what they're looking for. As far as property taxes are concerned. It's a given that even if the splost passes property taxes are going up, probably the end of the year, as always.I voted NO and will wait for the outcome, later today. Either way it goes, taxes will rise.

Every member of a renter's household that is not paying rent, but is living in the home, is not paying any property taxes.

Every member of a property owner's household that is not on the deed, or the tax bill, is not paying any property taxes.

You go on the assumption that each house only has people living in it that are paying rent or paying the mortgage. In this day of family consolidation, there are more people living under one roof than the one who is on the deed, or on the lease in the case of a renter.

You have property you rent out. Do you not know this to be true? You only rent out to one person at a time?

the rental property pays property tax. so the "family" pays property tax through their rent.

myth #1 renters don't pay property tax. this is just plain wrong. they pay it through their rent and generally, rental property is more expensive property tax wise.

myth #2 property tax is only paid by the homeowner. property tax is paid by all members of a household even if only one is the so called bread-winner. the others won't have as much money to spend.

sorry but no matter what the reason and there are none, i will never vote to increase taxes on myself. if the government wants to increase taxes, let them grow a pair and vote it in themselves. they will of course be fired, but that is the price you pay for wasting the taxpayers money.

Of course renters pay property taxes. I don't recall saying they don't. A property owner would be an idiot if they didn't pass that cost along to the renter. How would you make money as a landlord, otherwise? Been there.

I'm talking about the houses full of more than one family. Some are splitting the seams, there are so many living under one roof. Those people are not renters. They live with the renters and they don't pay much to do so. They sure don't pay enough to make up the taxes.

I want this SPLOST. You don't. We're both entitled to our opinions. We're both right. We're both wrong.

We have an older home we rent for $500 a month. If you think that covers the cost for the three children they have in Pike County schools, think again.

I'm not sure what your point is. I do hope you took how much the property taxes on that house were into consideration before you set the the amount of rent you were going to charge.

The rent covers the cost of insurance and property taxes on an older home that is paid for. Due to its age, the property taxes are under a thousand dollars. That thousand dollars isn't covering the cost of the three children attending Pike public schools.

Work in Griffin, shop in Thomaston, only live in Pike. Own 2 homes, but you won't see much splost from me. Gas is higher, grocery store opens too late, so how are you going to get any money from me. There are many like myself. We just sleep in Pike Co, but we do help support all those who do not pay taxes by helping their children stay in schools while we pay for ours to go somewhere else and get a decent education.

actually that's not true. i'm sure they are under privileged and therefore the school gets extra money from the federal government.

well, you know what they say:

enjoy paying more for your electric bill, gas bill, groceries, cars and everything else you buy.

did it ever occur to you that those houses are full of more than one family because they are broke, jobless and can't afford anything else? all you've done is caused them to have to live 3 families to a house instead of 2.

"you can't get blood out of a turnip" as my sainted mother used to say.

my family goes back 150 years in pike this is a bed room community now, we dont have thriving industry ,most of the tax is going to come from gas sales,these politicians aren't going to keep there word and fix the roads they never have why should they start now . they are laying back right now dreaming of how to misallocate funds for there needs not ours ,oh i can hear all the back room dealings going on right now , all you spalding transplants need to go back to spalding , oh you cant the taxes are to high,i voted no for the splost ,they dont need more money they need to learn how to live within there means, ten years ago what was the county budget 3.5 million now whats it at 12 million and all we got was a new jail a new school and as far as i can tell thats it, no new roads paved except for jonathons roost rd, i'm sure thats because of the airport , where did all them millions go ? some body tell me please, because i just cant see it

skinny, you must be from the dim witted branch of the bass tard family tree. contact ol' fat bass tard and allow him to explain the proper use of the words "there" and "their". listen to him. he makes sense. somewhere in the past 150 years, your gene pool was probably diluted with some Yankee blood or at least some from Clayton County.

skinny's a good guy. he just doesn't eat enough. alas, now that the splost has passed he will be limited even more on his caloric intake.

come on over to the house sometime skinny and we'll have some supper.

the splost fight is over and the people lost this round. i hope next time they are encouraged to go out and vote.

time to move on to more interesting topics.
