Along Highway 19 north of Zebulon, about three miles from town, are several acres of ground overgrown with pines and brush. But if one knows where to look, some distance off the road an oval of guard rails still stands – the remnants of what used to be the Zebulon Crazy 8 Speedway.

nice story and well done. i have heard stories of this track from my parents. they use to attend races at this track. it would be nice to have something like this around this area now, but i feel as though some community leaders and residents would railroad this right out of the county.

I applaud you, Tammy. This is a wonderfully written article. I remember when this accident happened. I was 16. Henry "D" Phillips is Fatso's brother and Margie Cochran his sister. Both Pike County residents. I can never remember going to the tracks but I can tell you many times about riding by when the dust was flying. Your article made me feel young for a moment...Thanks!

I really hope you choose to print this comment. When I was young, 100 years ago it seems, I remember my Mama saying, " That Roy Linch is so tight he is probably up there catching that dust in buckets on that land he leased." My Mother's Pappa owned Gibson's Pool and Roy would come down to swim and buy one coke and get two straws for his date. Ain't that sweet? Too bad he didn't run for president, I am sure we would be MUCH better off financially as a country!!!

I use to race at the track back in the 60's and also worked the track with wreckers in later races to help clean up the track after the crazy 8

Archives. Ask for the racing book
You can make a copy of anything
that I have in this book.

Okay this is weird. I was just telling my coworker about Fatso Phillips and how much fun the races were, and wonder if the track is still there; so I Googled him and found this great article. Mama and Daddy used to take me and brother to the races, we were 6 or 7, and I remember it was so loud and I loved the funny paint jobs on the demolition cars. I remember watching Fatso race, glad we weren't there for the accident. Thanks for the article!
