Cities to set budgets

Pike County's cities are working to cut costs and streamline budgets before voting on millage rates. Zebulon will adopt their 2011 budget Oct. 26. Two public hearings will be held at city hall at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and after the evening hearing, council will call a meeting to adopt the budget.

We don't need a full time paid fire chief or firefighter with not all pike county firehouse. Cutting pike county firefighters 'firefighter cuts'. What we want?

why didn't they do this BEFORE they sent out the property tax bills, which mine went up $350.00 from last year!

They ARE doing it before they send out property tax bills. The COUNTY already sent out tax bills. Do you live in one of these cities?

ANONYMOUS,I WOULD BE WILLING TO BET ANYTHING THAT YOU ARE THE FIRST ONE TO CRY WHEN YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY AND NO ONE SHOWS UP TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROBLEM BE IT A FIRE OR AMBULANCE CALL!THIS COUNTY DOES NOT NEED CHEEP PEOPLE LIKE YOU TRYING TO DICTATE WHAT EMERGENCY SERVICES WE NEED AND DO NOT NEED!I HAVE BEEN A FIREFIGHTER FOR ALMOST 30 YRS AND YES I "VOLUNTEER" IN PIKE CO. TO PROTECT PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO DO NOT APPRECIATE MYSELF AND OTHERS PUTTING THEIR LIFE ON THE LINE TO SAVE LIVES AND PROPERTY.BUT WE STILL DO IT NO MATTER BECAUSE IT IS IN OUR HEART TO HELP PEOPLE, EVEN PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF. You have one of the most dangerous jobs out there. You are on the same team as the first responders of the 911 attack. Firefighters. Being raised in a big city I know how important firefighters are. Thats the problem with people that have never been out the country, some seem quite ignorant. I guess firefighters are hero's in NYC and zeros in Pike County. Its sad knowing the risk is just as high for both. I guess if you never had a firefighter or in your family you will never know how important they are. Ask a 7 year old girl whos daddy just left out to fight a fire. She will tell you. Fires are to firefighters as bullets are to police officers.

Your service is appreciated & your knowledge of a paid chief is flawed. Your rejection to the post above is no different that our chief refusing to run a call when he was a career professional. What is the difference? He dictated to that taxpayer in Clayton I am better than you and you are not worthy of my service. How would you and others feel if that was you on the receiving end of a “NO SHOW FIREMAN?” Now he is here blowing smoke up the taxpayers butts in Pike and you and others are taking it hook, line and sinker. Are you trying to curry points for something promised like others in the department?

Fires are to firefighters as bullets are to police officers ………Your analogy is way off in so many ways.

Axes & hoses are to firemen as bullets are to police. Fires are to firefighters like 187’s are to police.

With that being said, it also appears that you are disillusioned about the term “First Responder” go do the research. EMT’s, Paramedics, Firefighters, Police, are just a few that have a title of first responder. The chief is of the mind set; that all the fire service needs to do is fight fires. That is a lazy non educated attitude to have. I guess that is what you get when have a non experienced administrator at the helm. I often have this lingering question, if our chief is so smart, educated, and politically connected why can’t he get a real chiefs job instead of playing paid volunteer chief in Pike. Hey I think I just answered my own question?

I knew firefighters who got killed by fires. And I knew officers that were killed by bullets. I never knew a firefighter who was killed by an ax or a hose. Have you? This analogy is off in so many ways? Your brain is off in a BIG way. Fires and bullets are not a guarantee of death. So hold back on all the drama with your 187 comment. Quit being so simple minded and weigh all the scenarios. Police officers are not permitted to enter burning towers or buildings. They are not supplied with the correct gear. When you are trapped in a burning building if you are lucky the first face you will see is a firefighters. They are going to be the first ones to respond to you inside a burning building. An EMT is not even allowed to enter. Also. You forgot to put the news team on your list of first responders. Are you saying firefighters are first responders? That is what I said and you said I am disillusioned. You must not know how to read or comprehend reading to well.
