The Pike County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting on Saturday, July 31, at 10 a.m. in the board room to discuss the proposed SPLOST with mayors or officials from Pike's five municipalities.

Not too long ago we managed quite well with only three commissioners.4 fulltime deputies.No more than 5 road dept employees (to be fair 1 was Donnie Dickins)It seems as if in the blink of an eye government produced the only product it can truly excell at.That being (More Government of course)Didnt have a choice with the steady tide of refugees fleeing Clayton,Henry and Fayette. Cant blame them picking Pike as their asylum. Problem was the demand for services they had grown accustomed to. All too soon they want the same things that drove them to leave there and come here.Insanity aint it ? JMHO

29% populations growth since 2000, 300% increase in budget.

either these refugees are extremely expensive or we have a bunch of empire builders in the BOC and Sheriffs departments.

Meansville Militia you are spot on!!! These spoiled refugees and carpet baggers start making demands the day they get here about services we don't need. Pave my road, pave my road, pave my road, waaa waaa waaa! People who live in private communities by the Flint River and in these mega expensive subdivsions who complain about everything should leave on the same road they came on.

I find it very interesting that the people living in a trailer, collecting welfare are the same people who dump on those that support themselves and happen to live in nice houses. Why is it a crime or a problem that some people in Pike county would like for Pike to move into the 20th century if not the 21st. Many years ago people rode in horse drawn carriage's and walked to school. I don't know about you but i'm glad we have come up in the world.

Wow. Speaking as someone who happens to live in a mobile home because of the economy it is good to know how our new residents feel about us all. Stay behind your gates because YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE.

I find it interesting that you jump to the conclusion that the comments previous to yours are made by "people living in a trailer, collecting welfare". There is no crime in wanting Pike to move into the 20th or 21st century....the crime is class attitudes such as yours.

I do not live in Pike couty. The constitution allows me the freedom to voice my opinion just the same as you. I can understand voting against a splost tax based on what it is being used for. But to vote against a splost tax because it is a tax is ridiculous. Due to our current tax structure without taxes, how would pike county generate revenue. Pike county struggles every year to raise enough money to fund its budget. The industrial park is relatively empty, and it is rare to see a new business come to pike county that generates a large amount of tax. Best thing to do is remove your emotions from your sleeve and use common sense if you are able.

pike county can't meet it's budget because it has too big of one. raising taxes isn't the only way to balance a budget.

there is this other little thing called cutting spending.

a splost is just another way for the county commission to get their hands on more money to waste on things pike county has never needed nor does it need now.

for instance, why should pike county pay for a natural gas pipeline when the only people who will profit from it are the gas company and the one (1) business that "demands it"?

it is one thing to freely express yourself. but to come here an imply that the people of pike county can't think for themselves is another.

is this don collins? are you here to help us think don?

Don't care where you live and #6 even without your vote not to tax yourself I promise you this SPLOST will pass. I dropped my guard last time, it will be up this time. Trust me.

SPLOST TAX? You got to be kidding. That is a tax for areas with Hotels, Attractions, Resturants, Tourist, letting outsiders pay for county programs. We have none of those here in Pike! So TAX ourselves? Get real!

I love to see city slicker transplants driving a big new truck and doing 5 mph on a dirt road because they don't want the truck getting dirty.

I always make sure I spin up as much dust as I can if I'm passing by them or riding in front of them so I can cover that pretty new truck in a nice attractive red coat of my native soil! Serves 'em right for posing as a country person. I make sure they at least look like they belong on our roads.
