Dolores S. Wilson, 80, of Milner, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2010 in Dallas, Texas. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at Saint John Lutheran Church in Griffin.

A soldier and the stray dog who saved the lives of 50 guardsmen in Afghanistan will visit the courthouse Saturday, Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with his grooming van as part of the Second Chance Dogs adoption on the square.

With soaring temperatures come soaring electric bills. Last month was one of the hottest months on record for Pike County. From June 8 to Aug. 8, there were a total of 645 hours when temperatures exceeded 90 degrees, an increase of about 275%. The average over the last 10 years is only 233 hours hotter than 90 degrees.

The opening night of Friday night lights was anything but normal with a rain drenched field and stadium lights that didn’t want to stay lit. The Pirates took the first game with a 10-6 win over the McIntosh Chiefs.
The Chiefs took the kickoff and returned it to their 24 yard line. On the fifth play of the drive, Kody Adams intercepted the Chiefs quarterback at the 45 and ran it back to the 33 yard line.

At a special called meeting Aug. 26, members of the board of education appointed Sheryl Watts principal of the primary school. Superintendent Dr. Michael Duncan said her projected start date is Sept. 7, the Tuesday after Labor Day.

Mae Turner started selling produce and other food items from a lean-to built onto her house nearly 80 years ago. She later built a store near her home and ran it well into her 80s. When she passed away her son, the late Albert “Al” Turner, kept Turner’s Grocery going 34 more years at a store he built outside Concord on Pedenville Road.

Shane and Bonnie Turpin of Meansville announce the birth of their son Andrew Donald Turpin at 12:43 p.m., Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at Spalding Regional Medical Center in Griffin.
He weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 201⁄2 inches long. He joins a sister, Alicen Walker.
Maternal grandparents are John and Susan Triggs of Locust Grove. Paternal grandparents are Jim and Judy Turpin of Zebulon.
Andrew shares a birthday with his father and maternal grandfather, making three generations born on the same day.

Betty Sue Keith Smith, 86, of Williamson, formerly of Summerville, died August 28, 2010. Friends visited the family Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home. Services will be held Monday, Aug., 30 at 4 p.m. at Fishers Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith will be taken to the church two hours prior to the service
to lie in state.

4 pounds small red potatoes
5 quarts water
1 (3-ounce) bag of crab boil seasoning
4 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning
2 pounds kielbasa or hot smoked link sausage, cut into 1½-inch pieces
6 ears of corn, halved
4 pounds large fresh shrimp
2 lemons, cut in half
Cocktail sauce

Add potatoes to large pot, then add 5 quarts water and seasonings. Cover pot and heat to a rolling boil; cook 5 minutes. Add sausage, corn and lemons, and return to a boil. Cook 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Add shrimp to stockpot; cook 3 to 4 minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Drain. Serve with cocktail sauce. Serves 12.

Meanwhile, there are multiple anecdotal and social media reports that a shooting occurred after the Griffin-Spalding Co. game in Griffin. Those reports have not been confirmed.
