Several board members and other officials noted how well attended the open house was, how many tours were taken and how moving the ceremony was that recognized the many citizens who helped with the project. Post Office changes possible

The Meansville Post Office is one of hundreds across the county that are being studied by the United States Postal Service for a possible reduction in hours. A USPS survey was sent out in early May to customers of the Meansville Post Office. The office is now open for just over six hours a day, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., closing for lunch from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. [Full story »]

Around 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, the Pike County Sheriff's Office received a call about shots fired in the area of Gresham Road and New Hope Road.

When the first deputy to respond to the call attempted to make a traffic stop on a 1997 green Toyota Tacoma, the driver - Craig Mincey - attempted to elude officers, heading toward Highway 19. [Full story »]

More than 200 children have already registered for the Summer Reading Club at the J. Joel Edwards Public Library in Zebulon. Registration will be open through July 13. At the Tuesday, May 28 meeting, county commissioners received a draft of the fiscal year 2013-14 budget plan. A first reading was rescheduled for Tuesday, June 4 at 1 p.m. Commissioners again debated how to set a policy for prayer at meetings. They heard from Ben Maxedon of Prayer Power of Georgia during the public forum and he was asked to stay for the meeting. Commissioner Carol Bass asked him to say the prayer for commission meetings on a temporary basis. [Full story »]

The new addition and renovations at the Pike County courthouse will be open for public tours and a meet and greet with commissioners, the contractor and the architect Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The project was paid for with SPLOST funding and cost more than $2.7 million. Tours will be held throughout the day and a presentation ceremony to recognize those involved with the decision making for the courthouse renovation will begin around noon. [Full story »]

Tory Merritt knows exactly how a tornado can tear a home and a family apart. When a tornado struck Pike County in February 1993, it ripped her home to pieces, killed her mother and paralyzed her from the waist down - just days before she turned 17 years old. The family took shelter in the hallway, but they were thrown from the mobile home and debris from the building landed on top of them. She hopes to be able to share her story of rebuilding after the tragedy with survivors of the recent devastating Oklahoma tornado. [Full story »]
