Man faces eight charges in Highway 19 shooting

Pike County Sheriffs deputies responded to a report of shots fired at a vehicle on Highway 19 around 5 p.m. Nov. 17. According to a press release, the victims noticed a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina driving recklessly along Highway 109 and turning southbound on Highway 19. The victims say the driver of the vehicle drove up next to their vehicle and fired a handgun at them.

The Pike County Pirates closed out the 2009 fotball season by getting routed 55-10 by the Callaway Cavaliers Thursday night.

The Pirates finished 3-7, having lost six of their last seven contests.

Pike votes down SPLOST

As the courthouse clock struck 8 p.m. Tuesday, the final precinct's votes were announced in the courtroom. All eight Pike County precincts voted against SPLOST. A total of 1,297 citizens voted no and 989 voted yes.

Disappointed citizens streamed out of the courthouse after the results were posted.
"I think Pike County citizens are going to regret this," said EMS Ken Riley. "Taxes are going up. There was a lot of misinformation and scare tactics from the opposition."

Vocal SPLOST opponent Gary Hammock was pleased with the results.

Fire claims life on Shackleford Road

According to a press release, Pike County Emergency Services (PCES) responded to a fire at a home on Shackleford Road at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The incident, which was reported by passersby, claimed the life of Kenneth Newman, 51, who lived at the home.
When firefighting personnel arrived they found the flames had been confined by two men, Mike Bowen and James Evans of Thomaston, using a garden hose. [Full story »]
