The Pirates started the ‘09 season on the right foot with a 52-20 victory over the Pacelli Vikings from Columbus.

The Pirates drew first blood when Andrekus Rogers plowed into the end zone on an 11 yard run. Andrew Chau hit the PAT and the Pirates led 7-0 at the 8:30 mark of the first quarter. [Full story »]

This Friday night ushers in the Fall Classic as the Pike County Pirates travel to Columbus to take on Pacelli. Last year the Pirates handed Pacelli a 42-28 loss to start their roll of winning nine games straight.

Can the Pirates do it again in the 2009 season? Head coach John McMillan says they have a better team this year than the 9-1 2008 team.

“If the region didn’t improve we can have a better season than we had last year. Our guys have worked hard in the weight room and at all the practices leading up to Friday night’s game,” said McMillan. “Pacelli is a very disciplined team and they’ve changed their offense a little. They’ll be ready and wanting to return the loss to us that we gave them last season. I look for it to be a dogfight for four quarters.” [Full story »]

In a softball tournament loaded with some of Georgia’s largest high schools and strongest softball programs the Lady Pirates varsity team proved they are worthy competition for all challengers.

The local girls began Friday night with an impressive 4-1 win over Region 2AAAAA Luella High School. The Lady Pirates leaned on the strong right arm of senior pitcher Ally Smith, who allowed only one hit in five innings of play. Saturday morning Pike faced talent laden Starr’s Mill, a AAAA school from Fayette County. The Lady Pirates took their opponent to an international tiebreaker before losing 3-1. [Full story »]

Charla Maddox has excelled at soccer since she was a little girl. Now she’s helping little girls in Germany do the same thing as a volunteer coach. Maddox, 19, graduated from boot camp with the Air Force Jan. 9, and was stationed in Spangdahlem, Germany. She is a member of the military police.

Pike County high school baseball players Justin Guy, Chris Long and Blake Ed-wards’ team won the Fle-tcher Championship Nation-al Baseball Tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla., July 28-Aug. 2. Teams from the U.S. and Puerto Rico took part in the tournament hosted by former Major League player Scott Fletcher.

Guy, Long and Edwards played summer ball with the 16U Big Stix Gamers travel team of McDonough. The Gamers won three games and lost one in pool play. In bracket play, they lost their first game, putting them into the loser’s bracket.

Excitement was in the air as football season was ushered in Friday. The stands were full, there was tailgating in the parking lot and the smell of burgers and popcorn filled the stadium air.

It didn’t take long for the Pirates to get the starved football fans on their feet. In less than 12 seconds, the Pirates had put points on the scoreboard.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- There are impressive debuts, then there is what Hunter Strickland did in front of a crowd of 1,296 at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night.

The 20-year-old prospect from Zebulon, Ga., who was acquired from the Boston Red Sox as part of a deal for Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche on July 22, wasted little time making the deal look justified as he stayed perfect through the first 41/3 innings and didn't give up a hit in six innings of work. He combined with reliever Diego Moreno on the first no-hitter in West Virginia Power history in a 4-0 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs.

It was the fourth straight win for the suddenly streaking Power (16-13). [Full story »]
