Pike County Parks and Recreation will host the last of the Summer Outdoor Movie Series this Friday. The Lorax, an animated film based on a children's book by Dr. Suess, will be shown on the lower football practice field Aug. 24 around dark. The evening will also be Football Theme Night with local cheerleaders performing before the movie. [Full story »]

Disabled Pike County veterans might wish to go to the tax assessors office and file for an exemption – not new but simply unpublished – that could cut their tax bills down to little or nothing. Disabled veterans can even file for a credit for as far back as 2008 after the Georgia Department of Revenue changed the amount they owed for 2012. [Full story »]

Assessors amend appeals policy

The Pike County department of property assessment changed its policy to allow property appeals to be accepted on the next work day following a deadline that falls on a weekend or holiday. Slight tax increase for county

Pike County commission announced Friday, July 27 that it intends to increase property taxes it will levy this year by .69 percent over the rollback millage rate. County clerk Teresa Watson said many cuts were made during the budget process this year, including significant cuts for health care insurance coverage for employees and their dependents, workforce reductions for planning and development, the commissioners’ office and the sheriff’s office as well as a reduced contract with Mid-Ga Ambulance and no contributions at all to the Pike Department of Family and Children Services. It has taken two votes once again to make a change in the construction plans for the courthouse. Initially, commissioners voted 3-2 at their July 16 meeting to deny a request for a $2,300 change order after recommendations from the courthouse project architect, Superior Court judges and the district attorney who suggested keeping the county’s law library out of the grand jury room. For many Pike County candidates, the July 31 primary election may be the deciding vote for local elected offices since the county has no Democratic opposition.
The Pike County Republican Party is hosting a Meet and Greet July 14 so voters can meet candidates running for various elected positions. It will be held from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, July 14 at Barnstormer’s Grill in Williamson. [Full story »]
