Pike County unemployment was the second lowest in the region during August at 8.9%, up slightly from 8.7% in July. Joblessness was 9.2% in August 2011. Carroll joined Pike and Coweta as the only counties in single-digit joblessness in the 10-county Three Rivers region. [Full story »]

Fall could bring allergy issues

This fall may bring cooler weather sooner, and it also may mean more allergy sicknesses for Pike County residents. According to Atlanta allergy.com, recent pollen counts show high amounts of ragweed pollen in the air and a moderate amount of elm tree pollen. That could mean cold-like symptoms for many local residents, including runny nose, sneezing, congestion, coughing and watery eyes. [Full story »]

Systemwide Pike County Teacher of the Year Mandy Cloy didn’t see it coming but her kindergarten students weren’t surprised when she was awarded and congratulated for her teaching skills. Cloy was selected as Teacher of the Year out of the four finalists chosen earlier this year from the primary, elementary, middle and high schools. [Full story »]

From 946 entries in this year’s SlowExposures photography exhibit, 90 have been chosen by the jurors to enter the competition, says Chris Curry, SlowExposures board member. A satellite show called “Portraits of Pike” will be open at the same times as the big show Sept. 21-30, in a pop-up gallery on the courthouse square. Wet weather brings West Nile worries

Recent rains could contribute to the spread of mosquitos carrying West Nile virus. People can get the virus when they are bitten by a mosquito carrying the disease after that insect has fed on an infected bird. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a total of 1,118 West Nile Virus cases nationwide this year with 14 in Georgia as of Aug. 21. There have been confirmed cases of the virus in humans in 47 states and it has caused 41 deaths this year. Almost half of all the West Nile Virus victims have been in Texas. [Full story »]
