Griffin circuit sheriffs take stand on gun control

Sheriffs Jimmy Thomas, Wendell Beam, Dan Kilgore and Barry Babb of the Griffin Judicial Circuit met and have unanimously agreed with the Georgia Sheriffs' Association’s stance on gun control.

The sheriffs took an oath to support the Constitution and will stand by the 2nd Amendment. The sheriffs will aggressively oppose federal or state legislation which infringes upon law abiding citizens’ right to bear arms.

The sheriffs further agree to support any legislation that would effectively penalize criminals who use firearms in the commission of crimes.

The first official meeting for new members of the board - chairman Briar Johnson and commissioner James Jenkins - was a lengthy one, lasting more than four hours and focusing on various animal control issues.

Commissioners voted unanimously to designate a different area of county property which is more accessible to the public and to water, power and sewer lines as the site for an animal control facility. The motion also rescinded the previous motion designating the property near the old chipper site and authorized public works director Todd Goolsby to mark out a 300x300 foot area at the new site. Twenty local students with special needs will take the stage Friday in a fashion show planned especially for them. Three young ladies whose vision was to create a fashion show for kids with special needs will host the second annual Paris in Pike fashion show Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Christ Chapel. Sixth graders Scarlett Mullis, Abbi Hood and Ashleighanna Johnson came up with the idea last year and with the support of their parents and others, a fashion show was held to feature 14 special children on stage. The event raise $2,400 for local students with special needs. [Full story »]
