As Meansville council members were presented with the finalized intergovernmental and mutual aid agreements with Pike County regarding the Meansville volunteer fire department at the Oct 10 meeting, they accepted the resignation of fire chief Scott Huckaby effective Nov. 1. City attorney Tom Morton outlined the intergovernmental agreement that has been negotiated for almost a year. [Full story »]

Pike County’s joblessness was at 9.8% in August down from 10.3% in July. It was 9.8% in August 2010. This means Pike has reclaimed its regional position of both lowest joblessness and the only Three Rivers county under the 10% mark. [Full story »]

C.A.R.E. helps adopt out abandoned animals in Pike County and will display many of the rescued dogs at PetSense stores in Thomaston and Griffin this Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2. When her husband died in a car wreck in 1962, Marie Rogers decided to carry on the family’s tradition of creating and selling pottery in Meansville. Her pottery was much different from her husband’s but in many ways more valuable because of that. [Full story »]

A Meansville family has sold millions of muscadines since the 1970s when Carl and Louise Cochran planted their first vines there. They lived on Highway 109 in Meansville for about 20 years before they planted the first muscadine varieties. Now there are around three acres of ripe fruit that is open to the public to pick for themselves or purchase already picked. [Full story »]
