Pike County’s joblessness was at 8.8% in March, down from 9.6% in February. It was 10.1% in March 2011. Pike remains second only to Coweta County in terms of low unemployment while three other counties joined the single-digit statistics. [Full story »]

The DEA's Pill Take Back Initiative aims to keep prescription drugs from being abused by collecting and disposing of them when they are no longer needed. Pike County residents with old or unwanted prescription pills can drop them off with a Pike County Sheriff's deputy Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Fred's in Zebulon. Molena fire station being built

Nearly six months after materials arrived, construction of Molena’s new fire station is underway with skilled inmate labor saving the city many thousands of dollars. The footings have been placed for the foundation and, if the weather cooperates, the concrete will be poured this week for the 5,100 square foot fire station. [Full story »]

Pike County residents can again enjoy Movies in the Park this summer. The Pike County Parks and Recreation Authority board voted April 9 to move forward with the free entertainment programs. The board authorized director Kevin Teate to begin working on the programing by selecting the movies and pre-show activities. [Full story »]

Dogs and owners alike can enjoy the fifth annual Dolly Goodpuppy Society “Just for Fun Spring Fling” dog show. The dog show will be held Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Barnesville Civic Center, behind the pool. A $10 per dog admission fee includes entry into all competitive dog events, including most talented, tallest, shortest, longest ears, best dressed (a costume event), most mysterious heritage (winner receives DNA testing), owner/dog look-alike, oddest couple, musical chairs and “dog of the day.” [Full story »]

At the March 27 meeting, county commissioners discussed House Bill 386 which reduces vehicle sales taxes and annual ad valorem taxes. This could cost the county part of the $400,000 to $600,000 now collected. [Full story »]
