Pike County fire departments were busy early last week extinguishing multiple grass fires in the county Tuesday and Wednesday. Capt. Brian Michel of Lifsey Springs Station 3 said wind was a big factor Wednesday when three grass fires were put out. [Full story »]

An Opening Day parade will start the festivities at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20 to mark the beginning of baseball and softball competition this spring.

The parade will start at Pike County Primary School and travel on Highway 19 north, turn left onto Williamson Road at Mr. Bs, left on County Farm and right onto Twin Oaks to the ballpark. Baseball and softball teams will participate in the parade as well as fire trucks, sheriff's vehicles, the Chic-Fil-A cow and more.

A lawyer conceded Tuesday he was asking the Georgia Supreme Court for drastic remedies in the Gwinnett County death-penalty case against Khanh Dinh Phan.

Because the state has been unable to pay for Phan's defense, attorney Chris Adams argued, the court should dismiss the charges against the accused double murderer or bar the state from seeking the death penalty.

A wreck on Highway 19 involving a tractor and a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado seriously injured one man who was knocked from a tractor. The March 8 wreck slowed traffic until he was transported to the hospital.

John King, a Pike County resident, has been at Spalding Regional Medical Center since the Monday afternoon accident.

"He's fine," said his sister Cheryl. "He just has a broken leg and a broken wrist." [Full story »]

Cuts proposed by the University System of Georgia would completely kill Georgia's venerable 4-H program.

The proposal includes elimination of all Georgia 4-H programs, 116 immediate layoffs which includes 94 County 4-H Agents, closing all five of the 4-H camping facilities including Rock Eagle, closing half of the county extension offices eliminating another 169 positions, and a host of other program eliminations and facility closures. Volunteer firefighter and first responder Robert Gresham – and others – rose to the defense of fire chief Danny Henderson, saying what happened in Clayton County does not have any bearing on his performance in Pike County.

Pike County's unemployment rate fell again in December to 10.7%, allowing it to regain its long held position as best employed county in the 10-county Three Rivers region. Pike's unemployment was down from 11% in November.
