The Molena Turkey Fest is getting a fresh start as the city celebrates its history by adding ‘turkey’ into the festival’s title. The event is set for Saturday, Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include food vendors selling turkey, arts and crafts booths, inflatables, face painting and new events such as the Cruise In for antique and show cars. Ten Pike County High School students recently completed two public service announcements to share an important message on prescription drug use, misuse and abuse with other students, parents and grandparents. At their Oct. 8 meeting, Pike County commissioners discussed animal control and approved a resolution to make budget changes for the recent road project on Old Zebulon Road. The cities of Molena and Concord held emergency special called city council meetings Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. following the arrest of Jim Roberts Oct. 15.

Roberts served as mayor of Concord and police chief of Molena. Concord's mayor pro tem John Strickland was appointed as the city's acting mayor and in Molena, an interim police chief was appointed Oct. 16.

UPDATE: Roberts He was arrested by the GBI and faces charges of solicitation of sodomy and theft by conversion. He was denied bond by Judge Fletcher Sams at a preliminary bond hearing in superior court Thursday morning. [Full story »]

CrossPointe Christian Academy students recently cast their votes for student council positions following the same procedures as adults for the upcoming Nov. 4 election. Student voters registered to vote and applied for absentee ballots if they were unable to make it to school Tuesday, Oct. 7. Candidates qualified for their respective positions by meeting behavioral and grade level criteria and paying a qualifying fee. [Full story »]

Suspect arrested after car chase ends in fiery wreck

Sheriff's deputies made an arrest Tuesday around 5:45 p.m. after a car chase that ended in a wreck off Reidsboro Road in Williamson.

UPDATE: The suspect was Alvin Dennis Wix Jr. He was driving a stolen Chrysler Pacifica. Sheriff's officers received a call that he was traveling north on Highway 19 in the southbound lanes. The vehicle had been reported stolen in Clayton County. He faces charges of theft by receiving stolen property, felony fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement and had an outstanding warrant for parole violation. [Full story »]

A six-year-old boy who took two rusty revolvers to his first day of classes at Pike County Primary School Sept. 29 will soon be on his way back to Alabama with his pregnant mother and two siblings after a juvenile court hearing here Tuesday morning.

Judge Ben Miller Jr. dismissed a motion that Georgia take jurisdiction in the case, clearing the way for the move. [Full story »]

Pike County high school students have settled into their schedules – and for the first time several honors classes are meeting in the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) building. The classroom is the largest in the school system and will provide space for advanced math, honors biology and honors agriculture classes and will be the meeting place for high and middle school FFA programs.
