Mae Turner started selling produce and other food items from a lean-to built onto her house nearly 80 years ago. She later built a store near her home and ran it well into her 80s. When she passed away her son, the late Albert “Al” Turner, kept Turner’s Grocery going 34 more years at a store he built outside Concord on Pedenville Road. [Full story »]

Meansville Baptist Church will celebrate 125 years of fellowship and worship at their Homecoming service Sunday, Aug. 29. The church was started in 1885 in Old Meansville, with 21 families from Mount Zion Baptist Church in Piedmont. They bought a lot for $20 from John Means and built the first building for Meansville Baptist Church. [Full story »]

Around 40,000 Boy Scouts convened at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia last month for the National Jamboree’s celebration of 100 years of Boy Scouts of America. The Scouts built a small city of tents with entryways marking each troop’s area in a matter of days. [Full story »]

Pike County peaches are weighing down the limbs at orchards across the county. Gregg Farms in Hollonville has provided Pike with peaches since about 1960 when Patsy and John Gregg planted their first trees. Visitors to Gregg Farms can pick their own peaches from the orchard by the bushel or can buy already picked peaches and enjoy some homemade peach ice cream. [Full story »]

For Jody Harper, the most difficult part of managing the Pike County transfer station has nothing to do with the trash. It’s other things people often dump there. She says the number of animals abandoned at the center is disturbing. Feral cats live under dumpsters while dogs roam the area looking for trash to eat. [Full story »]

New Georgia laws now make it illegal to read or send text messages for all drivers and eliminate some teenagers' cell phone use all together. The laws go into effect Thursday and are punishable by a $150 fine and a point reduction from drivers' licenses. [Full story »]

The community has stepped up to show its Pride in Pike. Funding for the annual Independence Day Celebration is nearly secured. Commissioners were unable to fund the fireworks show as in years past and citizens made donations and efforts to raise the $11,400 needed for the event. [Full story »]

Paramedics provide care for patients while transporting them to the hospital, and sometimes that means fighting to keep them alive along the way. Paramedic Robert Ridgeway and EMT Gene Harvey of Zebulon's Mid Georgia Ambulance station were recently presented with a Save Award for their efforts to keep a woman's heart pumping after it stopped twice in the ambulance.
