A tornado watch was in effect for Pike County until 4 a.m. Friday morning. A tornado watch means conditions make it likely for a tornado to form, but a tornado warning means tornadic activity has already been recorded in the area. Commissioners fired county manager Mike Phillips at a special called meeting Thursday, April 11 after nearly an hour in closed session. Commissioner Carol Bass made the motion and it passed unanimously. Commissioner Tamra Jarret made a motion to pay Phillips three weeks severance pay and that passed unanimously as well.

"As a result of the executive session, I'm going to make a motion to terminate county manager Mike Phillips effective immediately," said Bass. [Full story »]

Bull Bash returns to Meansville

FAST TRACK: Runners are region champs

The Pike County Middle School girls track team finished as region champions for the second time in three years. The PCMS Pirates boys and girls track teams went to Lamar County in March to compete in the region track meet with 11 other teams competing from the Central Georgia Middle School Region.

Four athletes from Pike finished first in the region for individual events. The boys brought home a fourth place finish in the region competition. [Full story »]

Mark Andrews, the PCHS athletic director, recently received two of the highest honors awarded to athletic directors by the Georgia High School Association.
At the annual Georgia Athletic Director’s Conference in Savannah, Andrews was selected the Region 2-AAA Athletic Director of the Year and the Athletic Director of the Year for Georgia for Region AAA. [Full story »]

A blood drive sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Pike County will be held Monday, April 8 at the Allie Bankston Senior Citizens Center on Highway 19 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The life-saving donations go to the American Red Cross, which is the nation’s largest blood collection organization, supplying more than 40 percent of the blood and blood products used in the United States. Sophomore Magdalena Jenni took a huge leap of faith when she boarded a plane to fly 10 hours from her home in St. Wendel, Germany all the way to Pike County as part of the AYUSA program. She arrived just after the 2012-13 school season started and will spend a total of 10 months here before heading back to Germany. [Full story »]

Lady Pirates unbeaten in region games

This week the Pike County Lady Pirates suffered a hard loss only to recover and record their second region victory of the season. So far the team is undefeated in region games.

The team will return to action on Friday, April 5th, when they host the Carver Columbus Lady Tigers for Rec Soccer Night. All players who wear their soccer jerseys will be admitted for free and recognized between the boys and girls games. [Full story »]

Cases against Department of Family and Children Services employees were heard in magistrate court April 3 by Lamar County Magistrate Judge William Thomas. He dismissed charges filed by Pike County resident Randall Moss against guardian ad litem Charles O'Neill Jr., former DFCS employee Michelle Madewell, Liz Fordham, Joan Oxley and DFCS director LaResa Price. Madewell also filed for a criminal warrant against Moss for harassment and false allegations but those charges were dismissed by Thomas as well.

Easter holiday activities continue this weekend with several community egg hunts and many church activities.

Christ Chapel will hold the Easter Egg Drop and Hunt Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. at the corner of Highway 19 and Old Zebulon Road across from Pike County schools. The annual egg hunt will start with thousands of candy-filled eggs being dropped from a helicopter. The event is free and everyone is welcome. [Full story »]
