Business to expand into industrial park

Johnson Battery Company will once again expand in Pike County, this time into the industrial park. The family owned business has roots going all the way back to 1927. It was later sold but in 1986 the family decided to re-incorporate in Pike.  Shortly thereafter, the business re-located to East Point, but returned to Pike in 2004 and built an additional facility on the same site in 2007. Burousas tries to cut herself with pencil

Recent rumors claim Teresa Burousas attempted suicide recently in Upson County Jail. She is not currently under suicide watch at the jail after a Christmas Eve incident in which she used a pencil to try to cut herself. [Full story »]

Nearly two years after losing her 4-year-old nephew, Javion Willis, Gwendolyn Brittain and her father Roosevelt Willis shared Christmas cheer with 37 Head Start students. She wrapped four gifts for each of the students in memory of her nephew. [Full story »] 

Softball, baseball registration underway

Baseball and softball registration is underway in Pike. The Pike County Baseball Association will register children ages 3 to 15 at the old middle school from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Any child who has not previously played in the league should bring a copy of his or her birth certificate. Around 400 kids played baseball in Pike last year and more than 200 played softball. The tradition of using a baby to signify the new year started in Greece around 600 BC. It was the tradition to celebrate the god of wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby in a basket, representing the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility. Early Egyptians also used a baby as a symbol of rebirth. [Full story »] 

MLK, Jr. Day parade set for Jan. 18

The MLK Jr. Day committee of Pike County is looking for community members to take part in the Jan. 18 celebration. Acting director Regina Bridges is looking for motorcycles, antique cars, horses and others. The parade is free to take part in and will start at 11 a.m.

"I'm trying to double the entrants this year to make the parade longer to go around United Bank," said Bridges.
This year's theme for the 16th annual MLK celebration and parade in Pike County is "Is the Dream is Alive or Dormant," and will be discussed during an hour-long program at Mr. Hope Baptist Church. [Full story »]

Cheryl Hammond says a day doesn't pass that she doesn't think of her daughter, Kelli Hammond, 25, who was murdered in 1998 at her Zebulon office.

"She was such a bright spot when she walked into a room," the still-grieving mom said. "She had such a glowing personality. I knew she was that for us but, until her death, I didn't know the influence she'd had on so many people's lives. That's what hurts so much. What a wonderful life just taken and for no good reason." Unemployment falls slightly in November

Pike County’s unemployment rate fell slightly in November to 11.1%, making it the third lowest in the 10-county Three Rivers region. Pike’s unemployment was down from 11.8% in October. [Full story »] 

Concord armed robbery suspect caught

A convenience store in Concord was robbed Sunday, Dec. 27 at around 11:15 a.m., according to the Pike County sheriff's office. Deputies responded to a report a male suspect entered Alan's Stop and Shop brandishing a rifle at the clerk and demanding money.

On Wednesday, Dec. 30, Pike County Sheriff's deputies worked with Griffin police and Spalding County sheriff's deputies to arrest the suspect, Anthony Lamar Burden, at the Scottish Inn in Spalding County. According to reports, Burden was arrested without incident at around 1:21 p.m. and transported to the Pike County Sheriff's Office. [Full story »] 

Revolutionary soldier to be honored Jan. 30 in Pike

Freed slave and American Revolutionary soldier Austin Dabney fought and won many battles during his life and was injured by a musket shot at the Battle of Kettle Creek in 1779. Much later, he made Pike County his home. His historic grave site will be visited for a public dedication Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. off of Pope Street in Zebulon.

A town hall meeting that focused on the state of Pike County's non-paved roads opened the Wednesday, Dec. 9 commission meeting. Citizens raised concerns over clogged dirt and mud roads that need constant repair and asked if the county is considering any long-term plans to pave the roads. [Full story »]
