October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and survivor Saralyn Stephens Horne of Concord is well aware of how the disease can change lives. She discovered a lump in her breast in 1978 during early stages of cancer. Ten years later, another cancerous spot was found during a mammogram. [Full story »]

Election day is only 12 days away and early voting is ongoing at the Pike County courthouse weekdays through Nov. 2. Early voting will also be available Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early voting will be held weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the new office of the registrar downstairs in the courthouse addition. Parties involved in a lawsuit over school board redistricting will hold an open meeting Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at Old Mount Calvary Outreach Center to discuss the case. Four Pike County residents joined together to file a lawsuit Oct. 4 in Pike County Superior Court to contest school board district elections that took place July 31 and Aug. 21. [Full story »]

Around 30 residents attended a Saturday, Oct. 6 workshop on animal control and many issues and suggestions were raised. The issue was briefly discussed again at the Wednesday, Oct. 10 commission meeting. Commissioners voted unanimously to designate county manager Mike Phillips to gather information, research facts on starting an animal control facility and update them on animal control at every meeting. When Shariton ‘Charlie’ Johnson found out she had breast cancer, she didn’t let it stop her family’s plans to hold a Broncos and Barrel Racing Rodeo at her Williamson home. She will have double mastectomy surgery just four days before the Saturday, Oct. 20 event but encouraged her husband and family friend ‘Wrangler’ Jim Scott to hold the event without her.
