The Compassionate Friends of Central Georgia recently announced that bereaved parents, siblings, relatives and friends can register for a Walk to Remember Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park in Griffin.
Following the walk, participants can join for a short memorial service, butterfly release and refreshments.
“You don’t need to be a member of The Compassionate Friends to join the walk. We welcome everyone who wants to join hands and hearts in remembering all children who died too soon,” said chapter leader Brent Taylor who lost her son Justin Peeples in 2011.
Those interested in walking should call Taylor at 678-972-9352, email firstname.lastname@example.org or go to cfofcentralga.com to print a registration form. Registration is $15 and walkers will receive a special Compassionate Friends walk T-shirt, and a walk bib to record the names of children being remembered.
Participants are encouraged to seek pledges with the funds going to the local chapter to support outreach and chapter activities.
The Compassionate Friends of Central Georgia meets the first Monday of each month at Center Point Church in Griffin from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The group has a presence in at least 30 countries worldwide. There are more than 650 chapters in the U.S. including all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam.
The local event is patterned after The Compassionate Friends National Walk to Remember® in Chicago, Ill., where as many as 1,500 are expected to take part. Dozens of chapters across the country are expected to hold a local Walk to Remember during 2014.
