Georgia State Patrol Post 26 in Thomaston investigated two traffic crashes in July in Pike County, with no injuries or deaths. Troopers issued 75 citations including 39 for speeding, 20 seat belt violations and two child restraint violations. They issued 88 warnings.

Charla Maddox has excelled at soccer since she was a little girl. Now she’s helping little girls in Germany do the same thing as a volunteer coach. Maddox, 19, graduated from boot camp with the Air Force Jan. 9, and was stationed in Spangdahlem, Germany. She is a member of the military police. [Full story »]

Topics at the Hometown Connection included the county fire district, a Flint River dam, local cable provider, stimulus funding, SPLOST sales tax and the role of the Three Rivers Commission (formerly McIntosh Trail RDC).

State health officials confirmed last week a 13-year-old Pike County girl tested positive for swine flu. The teen is completely recovered and back at school, Hayla Hall, risk communicator for District 4 Public Health, announced Aug. 19.
The official notification that Pike schools had a confirmed case of swine flu caught citizens by surprise, coming just days after superintendent Dr. Michael Duncan said the child was not afflicted with swine flu.
“The parents relayed information to us that the health care provider had just told them she didn’t have it,” Duncan said. “We thought that was very credible information.” [Full story »]
2 cups cooked shredded chicken, cold
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
Salt and pepper to taste
3/4 cup mayonnaise
2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped (optional)
Mix chicken, celery, onion, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Add mayonnaise, mix well. Fold in chopped eggs, blending throughout. Serve on rolls, in a hollowed out tomato, or on a bed of crisp lettuce leaves.
Vegetable Pasta Salad:
1 (16 ounce) package uncooked tri-color spiral pasta
2 stalks celery, chopped
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped yellow bell pepper
1 pint grape tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup chopped green onion
1 (16-ounce) bottle Italian-style salad dressing
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
Cook pasta in large pot of boiling water until al dente. Rinse under cold water, and drain.
Mix, celery, peppers, tomatoes, and green onion together in large bowl. Add the cooled pasta and mix together. Pour the dressing over mixture, add the Parmesan and mix well.

Pike County high school baseball players Justin Guy, Chris Long and Blake Ed-wards’ team won the Fle-tcher Championship Nation-al Baseball Tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla., July 28-Aug. 2. Teams from the U.S. and Puerto Rico took part in the tournament hosted by former Major League player Scott Fletcher.
Guy, Long and Edwards played summer ball with the 16U Big Stix Gamers travel team of McDonough. The Gamers won three games and lost one in pool play. In bracket play, they lost their first game, putting them into the loser’s bracket. [Full story »]
