Mr. Bobby Ray Youngblood, age 81, of Griffin, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Youngblood was born on August 24, 1935 in Griffin, to the late Charlie Youngblood and the late Dellie Harper Youngblood. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Manderson Youngblood and son, David Youngblood. Mr. Youngblood was a veteran of the U S Army. He served during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Midway United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Tiffany Youngblood; grandsons, Wyatt Youngblood and Levi Youngblood; brother, Gene Youngblood; nephew, Kenny Youngblood and Betty Elder; and faithful companion, Roscoe.

Funeral services for Mr. Bobby Ray Youngblood will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home. Pastor Eddie Jones will officiate. Interment will follow at Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Kick off summer with football camp June 5-7

Pike County Pirates will help teach younger players during their annual Football Camp, set for June 5-7 this year at the high school Field House. Students from 7 to 12 years old will learn from varsity players how to play the “Pike County way” as the Pirates emphasize basic fundamentals and techniques and encourage an overall love of the game. Mrs. Inell Louise Patton Caldwell, age 87, of Concord, passed away May 25, 2017. She was born in Williamson, daughter of the late Milton Patton and Pearl Brooks Patton. She was a homemaker who enjoyed traveling and fishing. At one time she was a hairstylist in Concord. In her younger years she managed Caldwell Superette in Concord and was very active in the Extension Home Demonstration Club, and was named Pike County Homemaker of the Year in 1966. Mrs. Caldwell was also featured in the AJC by Food Editor Grace Hartley. She was a long-time member of Concord Baptist Church, the Friendly Bible Class and Forever Young Club. [Full story »]

School officials confirmed a teacher had inappropriate contact with a student.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Duncan released this statement:

On Saturday May 20, a Pike County High School teacher reported to District Officials that they witnessed a male teacher engaged in inappropriate contact with a female student. As a result of the District investigation, the employee is on administrative leave pending a termination hearing. The School District is cooperating with the Pike County Sheriff’s Department to uncover the full extent of the relationship. [Full story »]

Graduation is at hand and you have made it through 12 years of school. You have overcome some real challenges, you have suffered some big and small defeats. For the rest of your life you will encounter many obstacles, some you will overcome and have success while with others of you will experience failure. Just remember, you have 12 years of success behind you and a promising future ahead of you. Take any failures you may have had or will have for what they are, another learning experience. Pike County’s board of education welcomed a new primary school principal for the 2017-18 school year as current principal Sheryl Watts prepares become to the new Ninth Grade Academy principal next school year. The announcement was made at the board’s Tuesday, May 9 meeting.

Holly Harvil was hired as Pike County Primary School’s new principal after a hiring process in which she and other candidates were interviewed by two board of education members, two parents and three teachers. [Full story »]
