A fire on Dream Catcher Drive destroyed a home in Williamson Monday, Jan. 11. Pike County Emergency Services chief Danny Henderson said there was nothing suspicious about the fire and an investigation is still underway.
Henderson said a Sunday, Jan. 10, fire off Highway 19 was apparently started by a barbecue grill but the family's quick call to 911 helped save most of their home.
Henderson said people need to be cautious with heating sources during winter to prevent house fires. "People need to be aware of the dangers of space heaters," he said. "Always make sure there is a good 36 inches around it. Make sure it's plugged to an adequate source."
Spalding County has seen a rash of fires in the past few weeks due to heating sources, including a mobile home fire that claimed the lives of two young children.
"Unfortunately, people get a little passive about these things because it seems to usually happen to someone else," said Henderson. "The key is early notification. We can't help if we don't get the call."
