Cheryl Hammond says a day doesn't pass that she doesn't think of her daughter, Kelli Hammond, 25, who was murdered in 1998 at her Zebulon office.

"She was such a bright spot when she walked into a room," the still-grieving mom said. "She had such a glowing personality. I knew she was that for us but, until her death, I didn't know the influence she'd had on so many people's lives. That's what hurts so much. What a wonderful life just taken and for no good reason."

I agree, Kelli had a great personality and I am so glad I knew her. She was one of my favorite people. I just know God is enjoying her company.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammond, I have prayed for you since the morning in 1998 when we got word that Leeland had done this. His death by the state or his own hands would not bring Kelli back to you. But it sounds as if she was a wonderful person who touched so many in her too short time here on earth. Rejoice that you will see her again in God's loving embrace.

May He always keep you comforted and full of love, joy, and hope.

I HAD AN UNEXPECTED VISITOR THIS MORNING. HE ARRIVED EARLY, SAT DOWN WITH ME AND CHATTED FOR A WHILE ABOUT HOW THINGS WERE CURRENTLY GOING FOR ME IN MY LIFE. AFTER VERY CAREFULLY AND COMPASSIONATELY LISTENING TO ALL THAT I HAD TO SAY, HE SAW THE STRESS ON MY FACE AND THE TEARS IN MY EYES.

HE STOOD UP, WALKED OVER TO ME, LEANED OVER AND GENTLY HELD ME FOR AWHILE BECAUSE I WAS HAVING A REALLY BAD MORNING. THEN, AFTER REASSURING ME NOT TO WORRY, THAT EVERYTHING WOULD WORK OUT FOR ME AND BE JUST FINE, HE ASKED ME IF I KNEW OF ANYONE ELSE THAT COULD USE A VISIT FROM HIM.

I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF YOU MY FRIEND. I GAVE HIM YOUR NAME AND TOLD HIM WHERE YOU LIVED. HE GAVE ME ANOTHER REASSURING HUG, THANKED ME AND I WALKED WITH HIM TO MY FRONT DOOR. HE TOLD ME THAT HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO YOUR PLACE.

I hope he doesn't have to much trouble finding you....You do have such a common name...

You Bible writer church going self proclaimed Christians need to realize that God gave you common sense to know right from wrong. You read and worship The King James Version, would be my guess. You justify everything you do because you can with The Bible.

Don't worry about what church people attend. Church don't get you to Heaven, believing in God does.

Jerry, Cheryl, & Lori, I worked at Cadie`s Corner for John & Stephanie, & then later for Audie when this terrible thing happened, Kelli always made my day when she came into the store & she Loved drinking the Pepsi Freeze that we had, I teased her about it often, please know how much I have missed her & how much my heart has hurt for you all..we all know that Kelli is in a wonderful place, & I am sure we all know the suffering that the monster that did this will do for all eternity

I have the utmost respect for Cheryl and Jerry and their family. I have not offered insulting answers except for those who show disrespect. You act as if the Hammond family does not have a right to have anger against this jerk after what he has and will forever put them through. You will not turn Cheryl or her family against me. I wrote the papers on their behalf when this terrible crime happened and I will continue to support them in the paper until Cheryl asks me to shut up or Walter refuses to print my blogs. After reading all these comments I believe the focus of the article was lost. Cheryl, bless her heart, is not upset that he's dead. She's glad he died before the state did away with the death penalty.

I, and many others, agree with her sentiments wholeheartedly. I hope his death brings the family some peace.

And for the record - If being relieved or even glad he's dead is a sin, we'll just have to ask for forgiveness for that sin, won't we? Then all will be well and we'll all be in heaven.
