Freed slave and American Revolutionary soldier Austin Dabney fought and won many battles during his life and was injured by a musket shot at the Battle of Kettle Creek in 1779. Much later, he made Pike County his home. His historic grave site will be visited for a public dedication Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. off of Pope Street in Zebulon.
This Revolutionary War era portrait shows Lt. Col. Elijah Clarke as he plans a battle against the British. Pvt. Austin Dabney is shown in the background.

The outdoor ceremony starts at 1130 hrs., not 1100 hrs. And in case the access road is washed out by rain, we will move indoors to a field house facility at the Life Springs church south of Zebulon.
Thanks again for your excellent reporting.

P.S. Do you have a contact for Elijah Clarke's descendant? I would like to invite him to our event.
