SPLOST: How will you vote and why?

Pike County voters face an important vote next Tuesday, November 3, on whether or not to extend the current Special Local Option Sales Tax. Polling places throughout the county will be open from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

JC and Steve Marro say it is right for Pike County and our new Judicial Complex. Both know what they are talking about, they are a good team and I place my trust in them. I will vote yes.

SPLOST will not generate enough tax to support all of the projects that the BOC have approved. We will have to pay even if the SPLOST passes. Why in the world would they strap us into a 7 million dollar debt when they know there is no way to collect that much in SPLOST tax.
I will vote no. Make them take it from me, I'll be darn if I will willingly give these idiots 1 red cent.

County manager Steve Marro has brought us this far and made many many positive changes in our county. We are blessed to have such an outstanding person showing us the way. Stand up and support Mr. Marro with your vote of yes. It is Mr. Marro's job to study and move our county forward. Do not tie his hands with a no vote. Vote yes, move our county forward, you can make it happen.

I will vote no! In a perfect "Fair Tax" system our country would flourish, but don't kid yourself, Pike does not have the business to generate the money and we the residents of Pike are spending the money at our local businesses. People drive through our county to Griffin or Thomaston to eat at their resturants, shop at their Walmart, and buy autos from their dealerships. We still pay it one way or the other!

Vote yes. This is our prime opportunity to acknowledge progress CM Steve Marro has accomplished for our county. A thumbs up on the SPLOST will let him know how much we care and maybe he will quit his job search as his contract nears end. Pike has never had such an experienced county manager one who can control the BOC circus we have. Without Mr. Marro, Swift, Willis, Powers and Doug Mangham would be in the dark again.
CM Marro and the SPLOST has my vote of yes.

Vote NO on SPLOST. The current SPLOST will expire next year and your sales tax will revert to 6 cents rather than the current 7 cents on the dollar. Make the politicans be accountable. If they come back again with another SPLOST you can analize the situation. If you vote NO now, next year you will pay less sales tax in Pike County. It might even help Pike County business if they have a penny less tax--why didn't the Chamber of Commerce think of that rather than promote a new extended SPLOST. If you had to buy a new car and it cost $25000, you would save $250 if you voted NO and it won.

BTW, Steve Marro couldn't tell the truth if he was standing on it. The commissioners should have figured that out by now.

Pike County has approximnately 17,000 citizens. If each and every one of us gives the county a penny a day it would bring the county approximately $61,000 a year, a far cry from the millions !!!! the SPLOST supporters want! And when does the "county" plan on finishing the projects started with the current SPLOST money? We have firehouses with no flagpoles unpatriotic to say the least. We have potholes in most of the county's roads. But we do have a new soccer field. Mebbe I can drive my car around it waving the flag. Until the BoC and Mr. Marro show some fiscal responsibility - which none of 'em have so far - I am voting NO and urging everyone I speak with to do the same

Parrish Swift now works for a gas vendor who has a contract with the county, is that a smart patriotic thing to do?

It is so stupid to vote ourselves a tax. All it amounts to is elected officials spending more money from a different source. Then comes the idea that splost is so fair and if we don't have splost then property taxes go up. When is everyone going to wake up and smell the coffee. First of all splost has to have an agreeded upon and voted for purpose. Property taxes don't even factor in. Splost can do nothing for education taxes unless it is an education splost. There is a difference. But the big thing is this. If you are tired of being taxed then vote splost down. If the elected elite want to increase taxes then tell them no. If they don't listen then send them to the elected no more line. Fire Them! Elect a person that has an ability to listen to the people. STOP buying in to all the BS.

Think I'm joking. Go check the property tax records of our elected elite. Discover the value of their property and the amount of tax they pay. You might be suprised to discover how much property is in conservation to.

Slost is just another means of smarter people getting not so smart people to vote a tax on themselves to reduce smarter peoples property taxes even more.

Say No to SPLOST
Say No to higher city and county taxes
Say NO to higher school tax.

It is time government balanced their books and stopped with the pan-handling the people, spending more than they got, and live within the alloted means. Tell them you balance your checkbook and they can learn to balance theirs. Tell them you have given enough and refuse to give any more!

The real power rest with the people - not a few that think of themselves as the anointed ones appointed to rule over people to stupid to think for themselves.

Excellent post. Nobody stops to think the cost of paying extra wages and maintaining these new building projects brought to us by SPLOST. Every year the BOC will be asking us for a tax hike long after the SPLOST funds are used.

Splost is the only way everyone has to pay for services not just the homeowner. If this don't pass I will bet you we will have high property taxes. So its everyone pay or just us guys who own property. I just love sharing!!!

Sales Tax? Where, in Pike County, can ANYONE even begin to spend their money to accumulate this type of revenue? We have very little commerce here. I completely agree with the comment that MOST people end up in Griffin or Thomaston to find products/services they need/want, unless you're in the mood for chicken!

Call the BOC office and ask them where they purchase supplies. They send the county truck to Office Depot in Griffin. Where does Marro get his great white whale SUV serviced and washed, that would be Griffin. Chamber of Commerce supplies, that would be Griffin. Marro should quit blowing smoke up your rear ends.

Can anyone tell me why Pike tax & fee citizens pay for a motel room in Clayton county to raise support for a SPLOST tax increase? There should be a law against this crap. I know it is a Marro and Parrish thing.
Please support your family and self, vote no on a tax Splost increase.

Don't tell me there are no motel rooms in Pike, here we have meeting rooms already paid for by overtaxed citizens.

Oh, I really like the kool aid. Misinformed? probably. Also tired of pompous know-it-alls telling me what's best for me. Go ahead and threaten me with increased property taxes. they go up anyway. What I'd like to see is an increase in services in the county - paid for by the money already taxed from all of us. Mebbe those pushing for animal control will donate their time to chase stray dogs rather than have taxpayers pay the salaries of dog catchers. Or even donate a $70,000 truck to put those stray dogs in. Mebbe the C of C officers will forego their salaries so some of the businesses that have closed can stay open. Or mebbe the BOC will quit taking their county salaries so that money could be put to better use, like fixing the roads around here. Yep, I like the kool aid. I don't like the bullhockey.

We're seeing the most services that we're going to see for the taxes we currently pay. If you want improvements,the SPLOST is the only way it will happen. Some expenses, such as the proposed judicial complex, will cost over and above our current tax budget and if mandated by the courts it will be paid for by property tax payers alone if there is no SPLOST. We will never all agree on every SPLOST expenditure but voting against it will be "cutting off our nose to spite our face." As for me, I prefer to share the costs with everyone. Voting against the SPLOST will hurt neither our elected nor our appointed officials; it will only hurt us.

If the SPLOST was only for the updating of the Courthouse, it would probably pass hands down. But most of us citizens are not asking for more "services". If we wanted more services, we'd move to another county that offered them. As far as the judicial complex goes, the judges knew what shape/condition our Courthouse was in when they ran for office. Perhaps the new man coming on board to write grants can get us a grant for the judicial complex and let's let all that other "fluff" go the wayside at this time.

To be honest when I served on the Jury in Pike and went into the courthouse I was shocked a little to see how bad it was on the inside and my first thought is why has this place not been painted. With a little work and maybe some volunteer help the courthouse could look really nice and continued to be used as it is now. I see no reason to build a new modern building in this current economic situation. There is plenty of room in the courthouse to do the work of the court now.

way I see it they put too many items on this SPLOST. Problem is some we really need and others I don't think we do, if you have been in the court house then you know it is a disgrace and needs fixing , I don't think we need the horse farm project. Still haven't heard how animal control will be paid for after the start up cost. Should have narrowed down the projects big time.

But I will vote yes for the SPLOSt because this county will never get up to par with where it needs to be. At least with SPLOST everyone who stop s and buys something puts money in the pot. If this doesn't pass I would hate to see my tax bill to pay for these things.

just wondering... does it matter if we vote on the SPLOST?? there is no section 8 in Pike so the property taxes will still continue to rise, no matter what county you by your groceries from.. right? if we don't do the work to the court house we will get fines racking up for it "not being up to code"?

Take the Lowest bid for the work on the courhouse so that a company with a bunch of undocumented worker will get to do the work and you know what they dont pay taxes either

That is the BOC motto. They do not make a move without asking themselves "what's in it for me?" Willis Trucking business across the street from his house in a residential zone, Swifts new job with a gas vendor for the county and his taxpayer paid well, Powers and health insurance he can't get anywhere else, Nutty 1 Collins and his downtown projects, Doug Mangham who knows?
Time to ask yourself, what is in it for me and my family? Nothing you have control over except your vote of NO. Do not tax yourself more for the BOC.

Why do hard working family people have to cover rich peoples tax? A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned. Vote NO and you will know where it is spent. Vote yes and you will just have to guess what the politicans will spend it on. Let the current SPLOST expire, take a deep breath and go from there. Times are still tough. Pike County has not cut spending, wages or had any layoffs like other businesses. They think they are made of teflon.

In todays corrupt politics, a person is truly ignorant to vote themselves a tax. SPLOST is just a tax on top of a tax that never goes away. Politicians want to make you think they are doing you a service when actually they are just spending money. Most of the time they don't even know what they are spending it on. A small group of individuals that call themselves commissioners get together once or twice a month to reap rewards from the taxpayers; each hoping the other one has a clue on what is going on. They play a game of follow the leader. One will act and the others assume that one knows and they follow the person. The chairman figures there is a 50/50 chance of getting something right if the chairman is needed. It is a case of the I'll do what you do and if it is wrong I'll point fingers at you. Now give me my county taxpayer rewards for pretending I know what's best.

SPLOST is only going to cost an already taxed enough taxpayer more tax. Until the people say enough is enough, you are going to continue to get the shaft.

Interesting......will we ever understand simple economics. Driving up the cost of goods in the county will not bring increased spending in this county....it will only serve to increase the activity of buyers looking for value elsewhere. Until "OUR" Elected official 1)specify exactly what they want to do and explain exactly how the citizens will benefit from it 2)tell us exactly what it will cost thru proposed bids & 3)Show us they can come in on budget, on time, with accurate records we can clearly understand.....you should vote no against any increased taxes as I will. Taxation just because every other county is doing it is not the answer. Fiscal responsibility and accountability is what we need before all else and especially needed during hard times. Just my opinion.

I agree Robert. Pike country wants businesses to come to the county. But Pike punishes small business who have inventory that is not selling by charging a TAX on that unsold inventory every year. STOP THAT, I will pay the Tax when it sells.........

If you want to raise taxes stop misleading the public and the impact long term SPLOST projects will have on us. Long after these "new" initiatives are built like animal control, fire houses, etc.... It is the residents of the county who who be responsible to pick up the tab for wages and maintain those facilities long after a SPLOST vote. The only other recourse is for the Country Manager to offer us another property tax increase every year.

The economy is NOT recovering regardless of what the drones on TV tell everyone. Anyone who lived during the depression knows that. I say we regroup, make government efficient and vote out those who want to raise taxes especially those that "sugar coat" the real impact of SPLOST building projects. Now is not the time to spend money. Make due with what you have. I have to do that in my every day job.

#32 Fire Wood Tax/Fee on 11/02/09 at 04:10 PM
Just when you think we have had enough the mind of Steve Marro and Parrish Swift start thinking of new ways to take your money. Everyone is now trying to figure the fire fee/tax and now they want to tax firewood purchased to heat your home. The Clayton County Fire Chief says it is a fire hazard and taxing it will reduce the chance of fire. What has happen to our poor rural community? Is there a additional SPLOST on firewood? What if we cut it on our own property?

I have now lived in Pike County for 6 Years. I lived in Fayetteville previously. We moved here because we thought the county was a beautiful place. However, I have not seen our roads fixed, no new fire station and I understand the politics of this county are basically "a good ole boy" network. How sad that such a lovely county can be so backwards. I will vote NO for the SPLOST because I know I won't see the roads fixed or the new firehouse. Where is the accountablitiy?

Early exit polling indicate JC, Steve Marro, Joe Murphy, Parrish Swift, IDA, DDA, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Commissioners, Judges and the Drama Queen will get their wish. SPLOST is approved. Voters and citizens of Pike County are screwed again by CUVA and others who pay no tax. Cave Peoples they gottcha again.

JC and Steve Marro went belly up on this one. Thanks JC for supporting Don Collins and Steve Marro. Roosevelt Willis and Parrish Swift you need to start looking for a new health insurance provider.

You should all be ashame. JC worked so hard for you people that just don't understand SPLOST. You people should be grateful that he gives you his time and energy. Without JC there would be no new firehouses or fire trucks. Without JC our county manager would have taken a job elsewhere. Right now we need JC and Steve Marro to continue moving Pike forward.
