The CrossPointe Cavaliers defeated People’s Baptist Friday night by the score of 66-0. Quarterback Logan Payne threw two touchdown passes and scored four more times rushing. Payne went over the 1,000 yard mark passing on the season and is just 105 yards short of 1,000 rushing headed into game 10. Payne took over the quarterback responsibilities midway through game one when starter Cole Stahl went down with a broken collar bone against John Hancock.
“When Cole went down in game one, I was truly concerned because we had the offense set up with Cole being the guy at quarterback. Logan was a running back/slot guy who we wanted to get the ball to in space. Logan has really stepped up and has led our team all season,” said coach Jeff Weaver.
Payne’s first TD pass of the night was a 40-yard pass to Donnie Swinson. Senior Stuart Mullins stepped up big Friday with two TDs, one rushing and one receiving. Mullins also had double digit tackles on the defensive side of the ball. The defense held People’s Baptist to 100 yards of total offense.
“Coach Paul Frantz has been a great addition to our staff. He has the defense playing solid football,” said Weaver.
For the second straight week, special teams helped with the scoring as Braden Stahl returned a punt 54 yards for a score early in the first quarter. DJ Brooks took People’s Baptist only kickoff of the night 53 yards for a score to start the second half. Along with great special teams play, all the players on the roster saw playing time and gained some game time experience.
The Cavs will travel to Loganville Friday to play at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars are 5-3 and 2-2 in the region. Week 10 will decide either home field advantage or a road game in the first round of the GICAA division 1 playoffs for the Cavs. The Cavs are currently 7-2 and 3-1 in the region.
