Two of their wins came at the expense of the Mt. Zion-Jonesboro Bulldogs with scores of 14-0 and 20-1. The third win was with the Lamar Trojans with an exciting 6-5 win.
Pike’s game with the Trojans was the first in several years as both are in different classifications. It was a heated rivalry for many years and Pike took most of the wins during that time.
Pike struck first with two runs in the first inning. With two outs, a couple of errors by Lamar gave Pike a 2-0 lead. Andrew Padavano and Bo Townsend each had singles in the inning.
Pike added two more runs in the fourth inning with two outs. Padavano had a run-scoring triple that was followed by a run-scoring single by George Boyd.
Lamar had a big inning in the fifth as they crossed the plate five times. They had five singles to give them a 5-4 lead.
Pike answered in the sixth inning with a pair of runs on one hit and two costly errors by the Trojans. The only hit came from Boyd. Padavano had an RBI on a sacrifice ground out. Townsend had an RBI as well when the Trojan second baseman made an error on his routine grounder. The Pirates led the game 6-5.
The Trojans had several opportunities to score in the last two innings but left base runners on first and second in both innings.
Peyton James pitched three and a third innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Jacob Johnson pitched three and two third innings, giving up no runs on one hit. Johnson was credited with the win.
The Pirates are 10-7 overall and 7-4 in region play. The Pirates will play against Jonesboro away today. The Pirates will host Hampton in Zebulon Friday, April 8.
