Members of Zebulon city council hosted public meetings last Tuesday and Thursday to discuss the city fire department joining a county fire district. Council must decide whether to join Pike by the end of the month since county tax bills must be ordered by then. Council will vote on the issue at a called meeting Thursday, Aug. 27.
Council asked questions of city fire officials, the county manager and consultants from National Fire Services about ISO ratings, equipment reimbursement and an oversight committee that would include city representation.
The biggest issue was Zebulon’s ISO rating of 6 versus the county’s ISO ratings of 8 and 9. A fire department’s ISO score impacts what property owners are charged for insurance premiums. A poor rating (closer to 10) means higher insurance costs for property owners.
