It was swine flu after all.
State health officials confirmed last week a 13-year-old Pike County girl tested positive for swine flu. The teen is completely recovered and back at school, Hayla Hall, risk communicator for District 4 Public Health, announced Aug. 19.
The official notification that Pike schools had a confirmed case of swine flu caught citizens by surprise, coming just days after superintendent Dr. Michael Duncan said the child was not afflicted with swine flu.
“The parents relayed information to us that the health care provider had just told them she didn’t have it,” Duncan said. “We thought that was very credible information.”

Mexico seems to be the virus's epicenter. To date, swine flu has killed more than 150 people in that country and sickened some 2,400. Many infected people outside of Mexico appear to have contracted it while visiting there. The illness is curable if treated quickly with antiviral medicine.
However, I do agree that this is going to be a terrible year for the flu. The CDC dosen't come out with these kind of predictions out of thin air.
-African aids
-Mexican swine flu
It is what it is.
Regardless, the school systems credibility is diminished each time something like this happens.
The best way for students to keep from passing this around is to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, and WASH THEIR HANDS. The trouble with washing their hands is that MOST of the population does not know how to correctly wash their hands! In order to get your hands clean, you should wash them for more than 25 seconds, thoroughly, front side, back side, in between your fingers and up your wrists with an anti-bacterial soap, to keep from spreading germs. Most adults don't do this, so I am sure children don't! Many children don't even use soap. I think it would be a good idea for the school board to ask parents who are nurses, if they would be willing to volunteer to go to the schools and show children and teachers, from pre-K through high school, the correct way to wash their hands!! They need to be taught to cough into their shirt sleeve. Door knobs should be wiped off by teachers and the janitorial staff, with an anti-bacterial cloth every twenty minutes, so that the flu has a less likely chance of spreading. Does this sound extreme? I don't believe it does. If it saves ONE life...it is worth the effort. We need to remember that the flu season has not even arrived!
