Swine Flu in Pike schools?

Apparently there are two students in Pike County school(s) who are being tested for swine flu. Neither the ages of the students nor the school(s) they attend was disclosed but indications are they are from the same family. Test results are expected within the next 48 hours.

Why didn't the the letter from the superintendent about flu state that there was 2 possible cases of swine flu in the schools. I think the parents have a right to know.

If you and all the other ignorant people that are speculating about the flu were smart enough to get the facts instead of taking the word of Steve Marro, you would know that the tests results are not in yet. If your child is sick, call their doctor or take them to the health department. That would be the smart thing to do instead of wringing your hands and saying "oh my God what are we going to do?" I have children too. I have taken steps to learn the risks and what symptoms to look for. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to have some common sense. If more people would stop listening to uneducated people they would be happier. Where did Steve Marro get his degree in medicine and who does he think he is telling things he knows nothing about? Take a chill pill people! I know your little darlings are so fragile that they can't wipe their own butts, but give me a break. Parents around here think their kids are God's gift to the world. Believe me when I say, they are only on a pedestal in your mind.

I am educated about the swine flu and I am just concerned that it seems the superintendent wants to keep parents as little infromed as possible and I think we have the right to know!! It is sad we have to hear it from the paper instead of the schools.

Wow don't we have an attitude problem! I hope you do not work at my child's school. The more I read these comments, the more I am concerned about the attitude of the people in this county. I defintitely would not make references to other peoples children like that, talk about not getting the facts right!!! The pot calling the kettle black.

I went into the primary and middle school today and was told that they were not sure which school the students attended. They also said that it has not been confirmed yet and it would take 2-3 days before a confirmation was available. I also contacted my pediatrician and they said that no vacc would be available until January. All that could be done is the patient would be treated as the regular flu and to just watch for flu symptoms then bring the child in.

a friend of one of the nurses that works at the school called my mom today and told her that their were two children with it! one at the primary and one at the middle!!! so i dont know why the school is saying that they dont know what school the children attend??? oh and were are the letters that they were suppose to send home????

I have two kids in the school system. Both at different schools. Both children brought home letters. You might need to ask your child's teacher.

The letters went home today with your child. Ask him or her where it is. It's not called Swine Flu; it's called H1N1. All cases of the flu are being treated as possible cases right now b/c health departments are so backed up. It takes several days to get a diagnosis.

The schools can't tell you something they don't know. There is no reason to tell you that two students have the flu. Did you also know that some students have a stomach virus? Oh, and my son has a cold. Do you need a letter for that, too?

I need a letter for anything that is CONTAGIOUS. Apparently you have never had a child that has had to be hospitalized for an illness. We are just concerned parents. If you cannot respect that then you need to keep your comments to yourself. We don't need your useless knowledge.

If you are that concerned and want to be notified of ANYTHING contagious, you need to talk to your child's teacher. The teacher needs to make you aware of who is sick in the classroom. The BOE is not going to have all the details of who is sick and who isn't and just how sick they are. All they can do is monitor the situation and pass along any CONFIRMED information.The article says the students are being "TESTED" that is NOT a confirmation.

I do check my kids backpacks everyday and there was not a letter in them.

Peacock is an interesting name and appropriate for your attitude. I appreciate your desire for correct terminology; however, I won't have the White House tell me not to say "swine flu". I'm not exaggerating--Obama has told the American public not to use that term. Perhaps you would like to report me to the White House e-mail rat-out line; it's mailto:flag@whitehouse.gov. I think it's just fantastic that they chose to use the word "flag" in this address--appearing patriotic, yet "flagging" those of us who dare to be subversive and say what we think.

It's swine flu, because the virus started in pigs. That doesn't mean you can't eat pork, it's just where the virus started. Americans are smart enough to realize this. The idiot government in Egypt slaughtered all pigs, but we are free here. Don't tell me how to think.

First off you can lose the attitude!!!! the girl thats in the middle school was flown to Egelston today!!! i think thats pretty serious!!!! and her brother called home bc he was so sick with symtoms of the flu and his face was really flushed!!! the letter didnt say anything that it should have!!! btw no i dont give a crap about your kid and his cold but i do know that any child that is sick the parent is stupid for sending them to school!!! ecpecially if its the flu or a virus!!! all these other kids or parents DONT WANT IT AT THEIR HOUSE!!!

Oh my god people! How do you know that the person standing next to you in the checkout line doesn't have it. Or the person that just handed over your change at the conveinance store isn't a carrier. Get a grip and practice sanitary precautions and this scare wouldn't be happening. You can't blame it on the Pike BOE. The bottom line is if your kid has symtoms, keep them at home no matter how much of a burden is to you! Don't put them on our buses just because you don't want to stay at home with them. Get them well, then send them back!

It is sad to see some of the comments being made. Where is the common sense? Don't start pointing the finger. The school system followed protocol. Bottom line you as the parent and/or concerned citizen should take precautions. Don't panic. Wash your hands often, cover your mouth when you cough, stay homes if you are sick. Come on, please.

Sounds to me like some of you folks just need to homeschool your kids. That way, you can keep them from anything contagious 100% of the time.

Still waiting on that phone call from the BOE about it. Its been almost 24 hours since they said calls were being made to parents about it and I haven't received anything except a letter that was way to general.

I received my call between 6:00 and 6:30. If you didn't get one, you should contact the school to make sure they have your phone number correct.

Get real people! The BOE is doing what they can to keep you informed. Your children are usually exposed to the sick child before any symptoms are seen. My son is in the 8th grade with the girl and my other son is in the same school with her brother. Don't blame parents for sending there kids to school sick. This time of year a lot of kids have problems with allergies and some of the symptoms are the same. Let's hope that these 2 cases are the only ones and not panic.

I think it's a little crazy that they don't want us to know about this. I have 2 little ones that goes to the primary. I want to know if I need to keep my kids out of school until this is over! So somebody needs to tell us what is really going on and which school is really is.

Sherri--aren't you glad you homeschool?

In general, would you keep your kids home from school during flu season? If the answer is no, then you should not consider keeping them home, now.

If your kids are immuno compromised, then that's different of course.

All employees are being tested tonight for the H1N1 and expect news from the CDC Atlanta within 24 hours. A employee did not report to work today and seems to have the pig crap (again).

That's funny I was at work all day and NEVER got tested...NO ONE has...you people need to calm down....It is so crazy how you just put stuff on here that has no TRUTH behind it....If you don't want the flu then live in a bubble...You can catch it anywhere not just the schools...The school system is on top of this....If you parents are that worried and panic stricken then Home School....But make sure you never leave the house...Don't get gas, groceries, got out to eat, church, just stay home ....

If all you people on here would spend as much time looking up the H1N1 on the internet. you would be educated enough to know what to look for and how to treat it. Leave the BOE alone get off the internet . pray for our children and TEACH PROPER HAND WASHING.

The School website has nothing about the flu cases at the school. Duncan's 48-hour deadline is about to pass. Has he said anything or even made a decision to say anything? If he lets this go over the weekend, hysteria and wild speculation will rule. If someone has his ear, please let him know from your fellow readers.

Oh My God! What are we gonna do? I knew it would come to this. I knew Pike County would get the Swine flu. I just dont know what to do. Im scared. I think the world is coming to an end! If John C. Morrison said he supported Mr. Marro and Chief Henderson and they used proper portocol then that is it and I believe it. Mr. Morrison knows his stuff and there is swine flu in Pike.
