While cleaning out my office - a gargantuan task which may require a bulldozer - I ran across a column my dad wrote in 1987 for The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville. Because tax season is upon us, it just seemed right to repeat the “wisdom and humor of Poke McHenry,” aka Vic Smith (1919-2008). He started the column with three dates:
February 25, 1913; June 10, 1943, and January 1, 1987, he described as “dark days indeed for our country.”

1987 column by Vic Smith still true today
